Grammar Spots: Punctuations—Hyphens

Hyphens are used
1. Between two word in compound nouns
Examples:
(1) English-learning is brought about good jobs every place.
(2) The phone-card is generally consumed by all persons.

2. To join two or more words that functions as a unit, as either a noun or a modifier
of a noun.
Examples:
 mother-in-law some-body
 twenty-year-old any-more
 single-parent families some-thing
 school-age children self-confident
 well-to-do baby-in-arm
 comrade-in arm every-day
 well-known

3. In compound adjectives (It usually comes before nouns)

Examples:
(1) The well-paid job is one which needs the better-educated.
(2) The long-awaited show is arriving now.

4. In compound numbers (below100) and in fractions

Examples:
(1) He has fifty-five dollars to help her family.
(2) It is equivalent to one-third.

5. After a prefix (It usually goes before nouns)

Examples:
(1) She likes non-violent protects.
(2) I will found a non-governmental organization for the poor.

6. Between two vowels which are the same

Examples:
(1) They are the co-coordinators for the Charity International.
(2) The co-operations between the both can be discussed.

7. To split a word when dividing it between two lines of writing or typing.

Examples:
(1) Although it had begun to drizzle, the teams decided to play the championship
game on that day.
(2) Yesterday, I had visited my godmother, godfather, sisters, and brothers, before I
came back home.
