The webinar was about motors and control its testing and maintenance, the speaker was Mr. Renato Ong.
The speaker started by discussing the provisions in PEC regarding motors, where it should be placed, how it
should be maintained, etc. He listed also the topics that will be discussed throughout the whole webinar; The
types of motor loads, motor starting methods/devices, benefits of speed control, speed control methods, criteria in
selecting controllers, and benefit of static devices/controllers. Mr. Rene told us that a motor is connected in an
individual branch circuit and it should not be connected with others. He also showed the different provisions in
the Philippine Electrical Code depending on what kind of topic about motors. He discussed that motors should not
be operated with just one phase of it on, because it will break the motor. Motors should be started with every
single one of its phases on at the same time. He also said that we can understand or know about the motor through
the markings on it, we can determine the:

 Manufacturer’s Name  Design Letters

 Rate of V and I  Vsec and Isec for Wound Rotor Motor
 Frequency and Phases  VFLD and IFLD for DC Excited Sync Motors
 Speed  Winding-Series, Shunt, Compound for
 TR on INS Class DCM
 Duty  Thermal Protector
 Code Letter  Impedance Protector

Motors should be placed in places with proper ventilation, when motors are open it should be located where
sparks cannot reach combustible materials. He said that disconnecting means should be accessible and it should
not be able to open individual poles at a time. And it has an “on-off” position. The speaker discussed the things
that we consider when choosing a circuit breaker, the ampere trip, the ampere frame, and the KAIC rating it can
withstand. Ampere trip refers to the tripping limit of the breaker, the frame refers to the size of the breaker, lastly
the KAIC which is the limit of interrupting capacity it can hold when there is a short circuit.

Starters is an electrical device which controls the electrical power for starting a motor. These electrical
devices are also used for the purpose of stopping, reversing and protecting electric motors. The importance of
these electrical devices are: it provides reduced starting because sometimes motors start with unusually high
current, it provides protection against overload, ground fault, short circuit, and voltage variation single phasing
and other system faults. It can help in changing the rotation, lastly internal and external breaking. We select
different starters depending on the motor and where it will be used. Overall the webinar really talked about how
we a motor works and about the things that we use when we work with a motor, and also how we could take care
and prolong the life of the motor.

In my opinion this topic will be very helpful for us, not just for the ones who wish to work in the industry but
also for the engineers who wish to work in the academe, eventually all of us will need to understand and know
how motor works in order for us to teach others and improve ourselves.
