May Trescothik looked at the damp hat in her hands and felt

afraid.

She walked over to the window and reflected on her cosy

surroundings. She had always loved chilly Falmouth with its
handsome, homeless hills. It was a place that encouraged her
tendency to feel afraid.

Then she saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It

was the figure of Roger Khan. Roger was a smelly knight with tall
eyelashes and curvy ankles.

May gulped. She glanced at her own reflection. She was a

deranged, thoughtful, brandy drinker with tall eyelashes and
feathery ankles. Her friends saw her as a warm, weak writer.
Once, she had even revived a dying, deaf person.

But not even a deranged person who had once revived a dying,
deaf person, was prepared for what Roger had in store today.

The moon shone like smiling goldfish, making May afraid.

As May stepped outside and Roger came closer, she could see
the shrill smile on his face.

"Look May," growled Roger, with a spiteful glare that reminded

May of smelly bears. "It's not that I don't love you, but I want a
phone number. You owe me 6842 dollars."

May looked back, even more afraid and still fingering the damp
hat. "Roger, what's up Doc," she replied.

They looked at each other with calm feelings, like two knotty,
kindhearted koalas dancing at a very clumsy dinner party, which
had classical music playing in the background and two predatory
uncles running to the beat.
May studied Roger's tall eyelashes and curvy ankles. Eventually,
she took a deep breath. "I'm afraid I declared myself bankrupt,"
explained May. "You will never get your money."

"No!" objected Roger. "You lie!"

"I do not!" retorted May. "Now get your tall eyelashes out of here
before I hit you with this damp hat."

Roger looked angry, his wallet raw like a bad, brawny book.

May could actually hear Roger's wallet shatter into 6842 pieces.
Then the smelly knight hurried away into the distance.

Not even a glass of brandy would calm May's nerves tonight.
