LAB # 4- Solvent Extraction Skilled Assessed: MM

Title: Solvent Extraction Date: 12th April, 2022

Aim: To separate a solution of iodine from potassium iodide using solvent extraction.

Apparatus/ Materials:

 Separating funnel  2 50 ml beakers

 Retort stand and clamp  1 50 ml measuring cylinder
 Solution of iodine (25 ml)  25 ml hexane
 Potassium iodide (30 ml)  1 funnel
 3 100 ml beakers  Pipettes

Procedures:

 Attach a separating funnel on a retort stand using a clamp.

 Mix a solution of 25 ml iodine solution and 30 ml potassium iodide in a 100 ml beaker.
 Add the solution into the separating funnel.
 Add 25 ml of hexane to the separating funnel and stopper it with a rubber stopper.
 Shake the contents of the funnel to mix the solutions
 After 10 minutes, observe the colour change of the hexane and the record the
observations in a suitable table.
 Place a 100 ml beaker at the bottom of the funnel and slowly allow 95% of the potassium
iodide in water (LAYER A) to run off
 Slowly then allow 10% of the remaining solution (5% FROM THE KI IN WATER AND
5% FROM THE HEXANE MIXTURE) to run out in a 50ml beaker and discard of the
solution.
 Allow the remaining 95% of the hexane mixture to run off in a third beaker

Discussion:

1. Explain the purpose of solvent extraction

2. Why is hexane used?
3. Why the iodine moved to the hexane (relate to the colour change)?
4. Why the KI remained at the bottom with water?

Sources of errors/ Pracautions/ Limitations

Conclusion: Relate to aim (state the colour changes)
