LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Mathematics 7 ( Quarter 3, Week 8 )

Name: _____________________________________________
Grade & Section: _____________________________________
Date: _______________________________________________

Introductory Concept

It is not easy for a person especially for a beginner who is not inclined in arts to
draw geometrical figures like regular polygons. Although this Mathematical skill may
sound theoretical but it is a very practical skill that a person can learn and be applied in
real life.
This Learning Activity Sheet will help you enhance your knowledge and skills in
dealing with geometric figures and on how to construct them.

Learning Skills from the MELCs

At the end of this learning activity sheet, student shall be able to construct
triangles, squares, rectangles, regular pentagons, and regular hexagon . ( M7GE-IIIh-i-1)

Activities

Activity 1

Direction: Determine whether each of the following represents a radius, chord,

diameter, secant or tangent. Refer your answer to the figure at the right.

1. BD

2. OF

´
3. EG

´
4. CD

5. AE
Note:
Provide the following materials for next activities: Ruler, Compass, Pencil,
Blank Sheet of Paper.

Triangle is the union of three segments determined by three noncollinear.

points.

Construction of a Triangle

Constructing a triangle with side lengths TS , RS∧RT

Given: Materials:
Ruler
Compass

Steps Illustration

1. Set the compass width to the desired length

of the side RT

2. Take the length of the side RS . Place the

point of the compass on point R and draw an
arc.

3. Take the length of the side TS . Place the

point of the compass on point T and draw an
arc. Label the point of intersection of two
arcs as point S.
4. Connect all the vertices to obtain the △ RST .

Activity 2

Construct the triangle given the three segments whose lengths are a , b∧c .

Given:

Square is a special type of parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right
angles.
Construction of a Square
Steps Illustration

1. Construct a circle with the sharp

point of the compass on the center
point.

2. Label point O on the center point of

the circle.

3. Draw a diameter of the circle and

label the endpoints A and B .
4. Set the compass on point A and
draw an arc above and below the
center point of the circle.

5. Without changing your compass

setting, put the sharp point of the
compass on point B and draw an
arc above and below the center
point.

6. Construct a perpendicular bisector

of the diameter AB.

7. Label the points where the bisector

intersects the circle as points C∧D .

8. Use a straight edge to connect all

the vertices to form a square.

Activity 3

Construct a square with vertices G , R , E , A and T on the space provided

below. Follow the steps on how to construct a square.

A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles.

Construction of a rectangle

Steps Illustration

1. Choose an arbitrary points A and B

and draw segment AB.

2. Construct line e that is perpendicular to

segment AB at point A .

3. Construct line f that is perpendicular to

segment AB at point B .

4. With the compass on point B, choose

an arbitrary point C on line f and draw
an arc.

5. Construct a perpendicular from point C

to line e and let point D be the
intersection. Then quadrilateral ABCD
is a rectangle

Activity 4

Construct a rectangle CURE on the given space below considering the steps on
constructing a rectangle.

A regular pentagon is a polygon with five equal sides and angles.

Constructing a Regular Pentagon
Steps Illustration

1. Construct a circle and label point E on the center

point of the circle.

2. Draw a diameter CD on the center point E .

3. Construct a perpendicular line to CD at point E

and mark point A where the bisector intersects
the circle.

4. Draw the perpendicular bisector of AE and label

point F as its midpoint.

5. Draw a circle centered at point F with the radius

AF .

6. Draw a line from point D through point F

intersecting the the small circle at points G and
H.
7. With the compass on point D and radius DH ,
draw an arc intersecting the larger circle at
points I and J .

8. Set the compass on point D with radius DG and

draw an arc intersecting the larger circle at points
K and L .

9. Draw lines to connect the points I , J , L, C , K to

form a regular pentagon.

Activity 5

Construct a regular pentagon in the given box below. Follow the steps on how to
construct a regular pentagon.
A regular hexagon is a polygon with six equal sides and angles.

Construction of a Regular Hexagon

Steps Illustration

1. Construct a circle and label point O on the

center point of the circle.

2. Mark a point A anywhere on the circumference

of the circle.

3. With the compass on point A , set its width to

point O .

4. With the same width of the compass, draw an

arc across the circle creating point B .

5. With the compass on point B , draw another

arc intersecting the circle at point C .

6. Set the compass on point C and draw an arc

intersecting at point D .
7. Keep repeating this process of "stepping"
around the circle until you return to point A.

8. Draw a line to connect each vertex on the

circle forming the regular hexagon.

Activity 6
