REFERENCE NOTES

A. GENERAL
A 1. The Piping Specification Selection Table lists the services to which this piping specification refers.
It also identifies the relevant piping specification at various pressure/ temperature ratings.
A 2. This piping specification utilizes socket weld fittings and socket weld valves in sizes 1½" and
smaller, except where otherwise indicated.
A 3. This piping specification utilizes socket weld fittings and threaded valves in sizes 1½" and smaller,
except where otherwise indicated.
A 4. This piping specification utilizes threaded pipe and threaded fittings in all sizes. Valves 1½" and
smaller are threaded, valves 2" and larger are flanged.
A 5. This piping specification utilises threaded pipe and threaded fittings in all sizes in conjunction with
stainless steel tubing and compression fittings.
A 6. This piping specification utilizes socket weld fittings and flanged valves in sizes 1½" and smaller
except where otherwise indicated.
A 7. This piping specification utilises threaded fittings and threaded valves in sizes 1½" and smaller.
A 8. The minimum permitted pipe size is ¾" except :
a) where indicated elsewhere in this specification.
b) for piping subject to vibration (e.g. reciprocating compressors etc.) or where the minimum
permitted size is 1" for connections other than line mounted vents and drains.

A 9. The minimum permitted pipe size is 1" except :-


a) where noted elswhere in this specification.
b) for tappings in valve bodies.
A 10. ½" pipes, valves and fittings are generally only required for instrument air systems.
A 11. Refer to drawing no. BN-LS-014 for the required gap between flanges for gaskets.
A 12. Use the recommended method of the branch reinforcement chart unless prohibited by stress
conditions, in which case butt welded fittings are to be used.
A 13. All branch connections are to be butt welded fittings.
A 14. Butt weld reducing tees may be used in place of weldolets, if available.
A 15. The maximum design life is 10 years for dry gas piping, subject to corrosion allowance.
A 16. The maximum design life is 20 years, subject to corrosion allowance.
A 17. Preference should be given to butt weld fittings.
A 18. Use BN-LS-B2 specification for offsites or if the line transports a highly corrosive medium.
A 19. Use ASME B31.3 for onsite plant areas, ASME B31.8 for gas transmission lines and ASME B31.4
for oil transmission lines.
A 20. Use the recommendations of the branch reinforcement table if butt weld fittings are unavailable.
A 21. If corrosive water is used in fire water service then the pipe should be seamless and annealed to
conform to ASTM B460 copper alloy no. C706 or BS 2871 CN 102.
A 22. Use Wauistrong or equivalent epoxy or fibreglass reinforced plastic pipe and fittings.
A 23. Above ground fibreglass reinforced plastic pipe and fittings must be UV stabilised, if not then they
must be painted to prevent surface damage.

A 24. Refer to vendor information for details of pipe and flange ratings, schedules and wall thicknesses
etc.
A 25. Smaller fibreglass reinforced plastic pipe and fittings may be used provided they are in accordance
with API 15L.
A 26. For above ground piping systems only.
A 27. Piping shall be designed to have sufficient flexibility to prevent expansion and contraction from
causing excessive stresses in the piping material. Flexibility shall be provided by the use of bends,
loops or offsets.
A 28. Thermowells are not to be placed in sections of pipelines that are to be pigged.

B. MATERIALS AND FABRICATION

B 1. Welding shall be in accordance with Caltex specification no. NSP - B9.


B 2. All threaded connections shall be seal welded except the following, as applicable to the particular
piping specification :
a) Yard and instrument air systems.
b) Water and condensate systems in 150# flange rating.
c) Relief valves, thermowells, control valves, traps and integral orifice meters.
d) Nuts and unions.
e) Plugs of valved vents or drains.
f) Vent and drain valves in level instruments.
g) Pressure gauge connections.
B 3. Seal welding of threaded connections is not required.
B 4. For seal welds, select welding rod to avoid the requirement for post weld heat treatment.
B 5. No welding is to be carried out on galvanised systems.
B 6. Welded pipes are to have double butt welds and 100% radiography to give a joint factor of 1.0.
B 7. ASTM A53 Gr A or B, types S and E are acceptable alternatives.
B 8. ASTM A53 Gr A or B, type S is an acceptable alternative.
B 9. T & C pipes supplied in double random length are to be used for well flow lines.

C. FITTINGS

C 1. TBE nipples are required for orifice connections.


C 2. Threaded nipples are required for threaded relief valves.
C 3. ½" nipples are required for orifice flanges.
C 4. Use socket weld flanges in place of unions.
C 5. Socket weld flanges may be used in place of 6000# unions.
C 6. Thredolets and threaded bosses are only to be used for removable threaded connections such as
plugs, threaded relief valves, threaded thermowells etc., unless otherwise indicated.
C 7. Thredolets and threaded bosses are acceptable alternatives.
C 8. Socket weld bosses and reducing sockolets are acceptable alternatives.
C 9. Elbolets, thredolets, latrolets, sockolets and nipolets shall be by company approved manufacturer.

C 10. For thermowell installation refer to drawing no. BN-LS-051.


C 11. The following restrictions apply to butt weld branch connections :
a) The use of reinforcement saddles is not permitted.
b) The use of equal sized wedolets and equal sized nozzle welds is not permitted.
C 12. ¾" nipples are required for orifice flanges.
C 13. Deleted
C 14. The use of nozzle welds is not permitted.
C 15. Required for valved vent and drain connections.
C 16. Bosses fabricated to BN-LS-072 are an acceptable alternative.
C 17. Elbolets and latrolets are only to be used in thermowell connections.
C 18. With the exception of hot tapping, preference should be given to an equal tee as opposed to a full
weldolet.
C 19. Preference should be given to RTJ male oval spectacle blinds and blanks for ease of construction
and maintenance. For dimensional details refer to drg. no. BN-LS-067.
C 20. Orifice flanges are to have ¾" tappings.
C 21. Orifice flanges are to have 1" tappings.
C 22. 1" weldolets are only to be used for vent and drain connections. 1½" weldolets are for thermowell
connections only.
C 23. If corrosive water is used in fire water service then fittings should be 90/10 Cu-Ni.
C 24. Galvanized malleable iron fittings are for low pressure instrument air systems only.

D. FLANGES

D 1. These flanges are not intended for general use, but only for use in conjunction with specialised
equipment and valves.
D 2. Generally, select only weldneck or slip-on flanges based on availability and economics of installed
costs. Slip-on flanges must be double welded. Weldneck flanges must be adjacent to butt weld
fittings.
D 3. Raised faced flanges are for wafer type valves.
D 4. Flanges shall be bored to suit pipe wall thickness.
D 5. The inner surface at the weld joint of pipe to flange shall be ground smooth.
D 6. For large diameter lines, 150# weldneck flanges and throat traps may be used. For throat traps use
½" threaded boss or thredolet and jig drill ½" diameter hole in pipe.
D 7. For sizes 1½" and smaller, use calibrated orifice pipe sections or integral orifice meters.
D 8. Thermowells, small relief valves, small control valves and unvalved vents shall be flanged where
any of the following conditions apply :
a) Design metal temperature is above 750ºF for carbon steel or 900ºF for alloy steel.
b) Flange rating is 900# or higher.
D 9. 900# flanges are identical to 1500# flanges up to and including 2½".
D 10. There may be interference between the hub and outer pipe if hubbed reducing slip-on flanges as
per ANSI/ASME B16.5 are used.
D 11. These flanges are for use with 250# flanged cast iron hydrants and 300# flanged bronze hose
valves.

D 12. RTJ flange groove hardness should be compatible with the hardness of the octagonal ring (max.
BHN 90), to meet the requirements of ANSI B16.20.
D 13. Grade B7M bolts and grade 2HM nuts are required when the specification must comply with NACE.
D 14. 1½" WN flanges are to be used for thermowell connections, in accordance with drawing no. BN-LS-
051.
D 15. 1" WN flanges are only to be used for vents and drains, in accordance with drawing no. BN-LS-
053.
D 16. ANSI 150# flat faced flanges are for connecting carbon steel piping systems to fibreglass
reinforced plastic systems.

E. VALVES

E 1. ½" valves are required for orifice taps.


E 2. ¾" valves are required for orifice taps.
E 3. Consideration shall be given to providing gear operators for valves as follows :

Size ≥ 10" ≥ 10" ≥ 6" ≥ 6" ≥ 3" ≥ 3"

E 4. Where located upstream of isolation valves, a spool piece may be required to avoid interference.
E 5. Dual plate check valves shall not be used with reciprocating pumps or compressors.
E 6. Generally, select either flanged or wafer check valves on the basis of availability or economics of
installed cost.
E 7. Where surge pressure may be a problem, consider the use of rapid closing valves.
E 8. 12" and larger check valves in liquid service shall be fitted with dash pots.
E 9. In viscous and/or heavy fouling service, consider the use of swing check valves.
E 10. Generally, select either flanged gate valves or wafer butterfly valves on the basis of availability or
economics of installed cost. A butterfly valve is to have priority if control of leakage emission, due
to the stem, is required.
E 11. Control valves shall be 1" minimum and flanged 300#. 8" and larger shall be flanged 150#.
E 12. In sour service use Stellite or Monel or 12% Cr trim with hardness as specified in NACE standards.
E 13. Up to 4" size, use a wrench operator. 6" and larger are to be gear operated.
E 14. Control valves shall be 1" minimum and flanged or suitable for insert on between flanges.
E 15. These valves with welded on flanges shall be supplied in a PWHT condition. Only bolted bonnet
valves are acceptable.
E 16. Globe valves are normally only required for control valve by passes.
E 17. Use only where valve replacement would involve extensive shutdown of units.
E 18. For ball valves the maximum temperature is limited to 250°F. For higher temperatures use special
ball valves.
E 19. Butterfly valves are to have 316SS trims. 10" and above are to be gear operated.
E 20. For details of fire hydrants refer to drg. no. BN-LS-071.
E 21. In certain situations when API 600 valves are not available, then and only then can they be
replaced with 2500# socket weld globe or 2500# socket weld gate valve and 6000# nipolet PE.
Valves are to comply with MSS-SP-84.

E 22. If corrosive water is used in fire water service then valves should be cast 5% Ni-Al bronze, flanged
FF, threaded or socket welded with Monel trim.

F. INSTRUMENTATION

F 1. Use in conjunction with Piping Class 150 B1.


F 2. The components listed in this instrument piping specification are suitable for use in non flowing
service with all piping specifications listed in the Piping Specification Selection Table
F 3. Minimum bend radius for stainless steel tubing is 1.5D. Where stainless steel tubing is to be
insulated, it shall be stress relieved after bending at 1600-1650°F (870-900°C) for 30 minutes and
cooled in still air.
F 4. Where the possibility exists of stress corrosion cracking at the anticipated instrument system
operating temperature, i.e. approx. 150-250°F (66-120°C), use Incoloy 800 tubing for hydrocarbon
streams and 70/30 or 90/10 Cu Ni tubing for non hazardous fluids.
F 5. Use Hoke, Gyrolok or equivalent fittings.
F 6. Tubes are to have a hardness value less than Rb80.
F 7. This instrument piping specification does not cover instrument piping within the jurisdiction of
Section 1 of the ASME code.
F 8. When reserving ½" stainless steel tube, use 0.09375"WT SS tube.
