me to share with you some additional information for
you to better understand the topic. Is that okay? Yes ma’am.

So, what is communicative competence?

- It is the learner’s ability to understand and use


language appropriately to communicate in authentic
(rather than simulated) social and school
environments.
- It is the field of communication that focuses on how
people use message to generate meanings within
and across various contexts and cultures.
- “The ability to interact well with others.” (Spitzberg,
1988).

There are 4 components of communicative


competence:
1. Grammatical Competence - this includes
knowledge of lexical items and of rules of
morphology, syntax, sentence – grammar semantics,
and phonology.
- Grammatical competence asks: “What words
do I use?” “How do I put them into phrases and
sentences?”
- Concerned with mastery of linguistic code
(verbal or non-verbal) which include:
morphology, syntax, semantics, phonetics and
orthography.
2. Sociolinguistic Competence- It is knowing how to
use and respond to language appropriately, given the
setting, the topic, and the relationships among the
people communicating.
- Having awareness of: social rules of
language (e.g., formality, politeness,
directness), nonverbal behaviors, cultural
references (e.g., idioms, expressions,
background knowledge).
- Sociolinguistic competence asks: “Which
words and phrases fit this setting and topic?”
“How can I express a specific attitude
(courtesy, authority, etc.)
- Possession of knowledge and skills for
appropriate language use in a social context.

say? For whom?
3. Discourse Competence - Deals with organizing
words, phrases and sentences in order to create
conversations, speeches, poetry, email messages,
newspaper articles etc.
- Understanding how ideas are connected
through: patterns of organization, cohesive and
transitional devises.
- TEXTUAL COMPETENCE
A measure of how well an individual can read
and understand different texts.
- RHETORICAL COMPETENCE
Defined by how well an individual can
contribute to a conversation, how well can he
understand what is being said by speakers and
how can he reflect and express his ideas.
4. Strategic Competence - The ability to recognize
and repair communication breakdowns before, during,
or after they occur.
- If the communication was unsuccessful due
to external factors (such as interruptions), or
due to the message being misunderstood, the
speaker must know how to restore
communication.
- These strategies may be requests for

repetition, clarification, slower speech, or the
usage of gestures, taking turns in conversation
etc.
- Strategic competence asks: “How do I know
when I’ve misunderstood or when someone
has misunderstood me? What do I say then?”
