Questions are of value as indicated in the margin

Answer any four questions

1. Choose the correct alternative/alternatives 5 × 2 = 10

(a) If P(type I error)=0.2 and P(type II error)=0.75, then power of the test is

(i) 0.8 (ii) 0.75 (iii) 0.5 (iv) 0.25

(b) If E(T1 ) = θ1 + 3θ2 and E(T2 ) = 3θ1 − θ2 , then unbiased estimator of θ1

T1 +3T2 T1 +T2 3T1 +T2 T1 −3T2
(i) 10 (ii) 2 (iii) 10 (iv) 10

(c) In analysis of variance, errors are assumed to

(i) have same variance
(ii) be normally distributed
(iii) both (i) and (ii)
(iv) neither (i) nor (ii)
(d) In ANOVA in one way classification, the hypothesis of equality of means of k classes of the
population is examined using

(i) χ2 statistic (ii) t-statistc (iii) F- statistic (iv) none of these

(e) Which of the following test statistic is used in testing goodness of fit?

(i) Fisher’s t (ii) Pearsonian χ2 (iii) F-statistic (iv) none of these

2. (a) If X1 , X2 , ..., Xn ∼ N (θ, 1). Then show that, X̄ 2 − n1 is an unbiased estimator of θ2 .

(b) If we draw random sample of size n1 and n2 from N (µ1 , σ12 ), N (µ2 , σ22 ) respectively. Obtain
a 100(1 − α)% confidence interval for the difference in means (µ1 − µ2 ) when the variances
σ12 , σ22 is known. 5+5=10
3. Define ‘analysis of variance’ and describe its assumptions. Write down the analysis of two way
classified data. 10
4. What are the basic principles of designs of experiments? Explain them. Describe the layout and
analysis of RBD. 10
5. Write down the difference between categorical data and quantitative data? Define Pearsonian χ2
and discuss the test for goodness of fit. 10
6. What is the criteria for the best estimator? ExplainPn them.
1
Let, X1 , X2 , ..., Xn ∼ N (µ, σ 2 ). Show that n−1 (X − X̄)2 is an unbiased estimator of σ 2 .
Pn h i=1 Pi i
1 n Pn
Let, T = i=1 Xi ∼ Bin(n, θ). Show that, E n(n−1) i=1 Xi ( i=1 Xi − 1) = θ2 .
