Education History
We are all aware of the fact that the term Education is so comprehensive and dynamic that there is no last word on
Education. It is used in both narrow and broader senses. In the narrow sense Education refers to schooling whereas in
the broader sense it is considered as any act or experience that has an effect on mind, character or physical ability of
an individual. Thus, Education is life and life is education and it deals with the ever-growing man in an ever-growing
society.

The term Education is interpreted in many ways as process and product, task and achievement, growth and
development etc. Many philosophers and educationalists have defined the term Education differently, according to their
perspectives.

During studying the history and even the prior to it, education has always been totally about the future. Swami
Vivekanand also described education as the sign of divine perfection already in man. Gandhiji also said the importance
of education for all round drawing out the cost in child’s body, mind and spirit. These thinkers can be described as great
poets, writers, philosophers, ideologists etc. But these great educationists had regarded education as the best and most
effective weapon for the modernization of Indian society. Their educational thoughts and philosophy still belong to the
21st century and can be considered as quite relevant because whatever they advocate still found a place in the hearts
and minds of many modern minds.

Two master-minds will remain outstanding in the field of education Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Unlike
most of western educators they were not only theorists but practitioners. Both of them discovered the fundamental
utilities of Indian culture.

Mahatma Gandhi wanted to recreate the society. He aimed at universal brotherhood, freedom, justice, and equality for
all. Gandhiji evolved an absolutely new philosophy of education. Tagore’s concept of education and its practices balance
the claims of different schools of education philosophy, i.e., humanism, idealism, naturalism, pragmatism, realism, and
supernaturalism. The two principal features of his theory and practice of education are setting up educational institute
in natural surroundings and the environment of freedom from fear.

One more great name Shri Aurobindo was a nationalist to the core and wanted that education must be all National it
means that it must be based upon the traditions of the nation. He advocated the merging of the spirit, ideals and methods
of ancient India in a more effective form and with a modern organization.

Moral and Spiritual Development

Education should provide an all-around development of student. Along with with physical and mental development,
development of moral and spiritual domain is must for proper development of a child. In favour of this view, Tagore
wished that education should target an individual’s all-around development and result in the perfection of the individual
and society at large. He advocated an education where, the learners are free from all fear, feeling of guilt, jealousy etc.
It should save the spirit of open mindedness, self-reliance and a spirit of inquiry in the learner’s mind. He advocated
moral and spiritual education is more important than bookish knowledge for an integral development of human
personality. Swami Vivekanand also supported this idea and stated that education is the means by which we can tie up
our mind, gain information, as well as sense of values.

Social Development
According to Tagore, Brahma the supreme soul show himself through men and other creatures. Since he is the source
of all human beings and creatures, so all are equal. All should develop social relationship and fellow-feeling from the
beginnings of one’s life. Education aims at developing the individual personality as well as social characters which
enables him to live as a worth being.

Development of Vocational Efficiency

Gandhi accepted one Upanishad shloka which is Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye – education is that which liberates – one of
the most important aims of education. Keeping role of labour to develop, Gandhi also advocated the necessity of
education for baking bread. He advocated knowledge through work and believed that the student must be trained to
became an earning unit after the completion of his studies is removed man can be as perfect, as absolute as
knowledgeable as he was.

Swami Vivekanand’s man-making education also included vocational self-sufficiency of man. He said “It would be better
if the people got technical education so that they might find work and earn their livelihood”.

Man-Making education implies that education which build character, Swami Vivekanand stated “We Want that education
by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by which one can stand on
one’s feet”. He was firm believer in education as an instrument of human betterment. He was highly critical of the
educational system itself with its Western bias and lack of attention to the development of the mental ability and moral
character of students.

Curriculum
Aurobindo Gosh protested against the loading of the curriculum by asking learner to learn something of everything.
Instead of learning many subjects he wanted to introduce few subjects with intensive knowledge. Being a votary of
ancient Indian culture and civilization, he wanted to introduce the study of Indian History and Culture in curriculum.

Physical Education
Swami Vivekanand attached great importance to the physical development of pupils for which he wanted to include
Physical Education as an integral part of curriculum. Vivekanand was not satisfied with an education that only look to
the development of mind. He was also greatly concerned with the proper care of body and the healthy development of
one’s physique.

Shri Aurobindo suggested that physical education can be provided through physical training games, sports, gymnastics,
and so on.

Tagore’s educational philosophy also aims at the physical development of the child. He gave much importance to sound
and healthy physique. Yoga, games and sports prescribed in Shanti-Niketan as an integral part of the education system.
