Modal auxiliary should and ought to: active and passive voice
Expresiones en voz pasiva y activa con should y ought to.

El vocabulario SHOULD significa = debe / debería y se utiliza para dar sugerencias, o

recomendaciones.

La expresión OUGHT TO es equivalente a SHOULD (tienen el mismo significado).

Cuando utilizamos SHOULD o bien OUGHT TO, estamos mencionando que es “lo correcto”, “lo
que se debe o debería hacer”.

Es muy común acompañar este vocabulario con “I think”, observa los siguientes

• I think you should study more = yo creo que deberías estudiar más.
• I think you should ask your parents before making a decision. = yo creo que deberías
preguntarles a tus papás antes de tomar una decisión.
• I think you ought to study more = yo creo que deberías estudiar más.
• I think you ought to ask your parents before making a decision. = yo creo que deberías
preguntarles a tus papás antes de tomar una decisión.

Por cuestiones de objetividad nos vamos a centrar en el vocabulario should (el cual es más
común en inglés americano).

El negativo de éste es: SHOULD NOT / SHOULDN’T

Por ejemplo:
• I think you shouldn’t sleep that much.

Active voice
La construcción en voz activa utiliza la siguiente estructura:

Analiza los siguientes ejemplos

• You should have a regular checkup.
• I think, he should go to the doctor.
• In my opinion, we should get an appointment.
• You should see a dentist.

Passive voice
A diferencia de la voz activa, dentro de la voz pasiva se debe colocar “lo que debe ser
realizado” sin que se señale directamente quien debe hacer dicha acción.

Observa el cambio de voz activa a voz pasiva en los siguientes ejemplos

Active Passive
You should take a birth control pill. Birth control pills should be taken.
You should not use drugs like cocaine. Drugs like cocaine shouldn’t be used.
You should have some counseling. Some counseling should be taken

Here are more passive voice examples:

• An appointment should be made
• The patient should be examined
• Cough syrup should be taken
• Blood pressure should be checked
• Fluids should be drunk constantly

ocasiones, el escenario es el siguiente:
There is a person feeling depressed, the person is a 19 school dropout, he is using drugs, he also
abuses from alcohol. The person blames family, friends, even his dog for the situation he is living.
At the same time his depression is growing, so is his aggressiveness. The guy’s girlfriend has just
given birth to a beautiful baby girl, but he refuses to take care of the baby or to support the girl.
