Mapeh 7 - Q4module4 - Arts
INTRODUCTION
This module was designed and written for the students to use their understanding in Filipino festivals and
theatrical forms particularly on the relationship of art elements and processes used in the diffewrent cultural
communities so that in the long run, they will be able to develop the needed knowledge, skills, and talents in
becoming art teachers or practitioners, stage/fashion/interior designers, and the like, as well as making
positive art and cultural contributions to their family and society as well. This module comprises of three (3)
lessons namely: Religious Festivals, Nonreligious/Regional Festivals, and Representative Philippine
Theatrical Forms.
The learner demonstrates basic understanding of the fundamental processes in music and the arts
through performing, creating, listening and observing, and responding towards appreciation of the cultural
richness of the different provinces in the Philippines.

The map above shows the Philippine festivals that are celebrated almost every day. Or instance, a
festival is celebrated in one place to honor the feast of their patron or to celebrate the famous product of the
town.
CORE CONTENTS
- Fertility Dance
Sayaw sa Obando, one of the well-known dance rituals in the country celebrated every year
during the month of May.
It follows the tune of the musical instruments made of bamboo materials.
- Moriones
It is annual colorful festival held every holy Week in the province of Marinduque.

Men and women wear their Moriones costumes and masks replicating the array and biblical Roan
soldiers as how the locals interpret the.
It reenacts the feast of St. Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye.
- Ati-atihan
It is an annual feast held every January in honor of the Santo Niño.
It concludes on the third Sunday in the island and town of Kalibo, Aklan.
- Sinulog
It is an annual religious festival held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City.
The festival commemorates the Filipino people’s animist origin and their acceptance of Roan
Catholicism.
- Dinagyang
It is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City held every fourth Sunday of January.

It is held in honor of the Sto. Niño and to celebrate the arrival of the Panay settlers in the island.
B. Nonreligious Festivals
Panagbenga Festival
- It means “season of blooming.”
- This festival is held in the summer capital of the Philippines during the month of February as their
tribute to the “City of Flowers” and as their way of showing to the people that they can rise after
devastating 1990 Luzon earthquake.
Masskara Festival
- It is held every third weekend of October nearest October 19, the city’s Charter anniversary.
- The festival started in 1980 during the region’s period of economic crisis.
Kadayawan Festival
- The yearly davao festival strated as a celebration known as “Apo Duwaling” festival from a
government-
initiated project called
“Unlad Proyekto Davao”
in the late 1980s
- It was planned to unite
the Dabawenyo after

the martial Law years and to exhibit the city as peaceful, colorful, and culturally laden place to visit

Kaamulan Festival
- This Malaybalay’s ethnic cultural festival is held annually from the second half of February to March
10, the anniversary date of the foundation of Bukidnon as a province in 1917.
Senakulo
- It is Lenten play (performed during the Holy Week) that showcases the life, passion, and death of
Jesus Christ.
- It is a collaborative affair because it usually employs the whole community as actors and spectators
as part of the scene.

development of the individual’s cultural identity.
Most of the Filipino theatrical forms and celebrations have religious origins and entwine cultural
significance in traditional activities.
