PROBLEM STATEMENT

Manila is known for its historic places and landmarks. The ancestral homes,
street layouts and structures portray the rich culture and history of the Philippines.
However, as the city progressed poor urban developmental problems rise. Over
population congested the city. Pollution from slum areas worsens its condition.

 Poor waste disposal management


 Barangay 309 is prone to flooding.
Areas likely to experience flood heights between 0.5 meter or less and/or
flood duration of less than 1 day. These areas include low hills and gentle
slopes. They also have spares to moderate drainage density.
 Few parking areas for commercial spaces
 Presence of informal settlement
 Informal vendors scattered in the sidewalks

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The researchers chose to conduct an on-site survey research analysis because it


is best served to answer the questions and purposes of the study. The students
documented the actual site observations through photo documentation, sketches, map
diagrams, and street scaping. After this they layout site elevations and SWOT Analysis
(Strength, Weakness, Threats, Opportunity). The researchers also conducted interviews
from residents in the area who knows the present conditions and the history of the
barangay. For further studies, they researched pertinent case studies and articles that
contributed to the study. They also consulted an advisers in urban planning to come up
with findings and solution.

The barangay is flood prone area with moderate flood susceptibility. Trashes are not
properly disposed on some areas especially in Evangelista and Soler streets. Existing
commercial establishments along Evangelista and Gonzalo Puyat St. produces
unwanted noise in the area.

The land uses in the study area are not properly zoned. It is a mixed use type of
community. Commercial spaces and residential units are combined. Pedestrians do not
have clear view of the streets walkways. Parking areas are insufficient. Vehicles were
parked in the sidewalks. Consumers occupied streets. Temporary stalls creates
congestion to street sidewalks and driveways. The community is not inclusive to all.
There are no definite guide to people with special needs. Road intersections were used
for recreational services like basketball games. Unorganized utility wires were
obstructing views to important structures. Buildings were dilapidated. The urban image
is unattractive.
