FINDINGS: SOCIO-CULTURAL/HISTORICAL

Urban Constraints/Challenges

As assigned with our barangay (Barangay 308), we immediately visited our assigned community. We
have been observing and keeping an eye on every surroundings of our assigned community, especially
noticing everything that we can use to perform our project. Our first findings is the Socio-Cultural or
Historical background of our community. The Lack of neighborhood or community identity is what we
directly noticed or observed, there is no any identity that our community have and also residents area
were mixed or merged with the commercial spaces, and due to this kind of setting, it results to lack of
proper zoning within our community. Next is the Divergence of social groups, which we already noticed
the lack of proper zoning and residents were mixed with commercial spaces, since almost of our
assigned community were commercials, we’ve noticed that in every residential buildings, its ground
floor were intended for commercials. The last one were the lack of commitment of some local
community in the place, were it seems like some of the people forgotten that it is still their community
and their responsibility, and in order for their community to grow, it should begin from them.

FINDINGS: ENVIRONMENTAL

Urban Constraints/Challenges

Our next findings is the environment within our assigned community, which we have noticed that the
community were experiencing a noisy environment which includes the noise that comes from vehicles,
vendors, the under construction road, and the people itself. Next is the Air pollution, since almost of our
assigned community were commercials, it is likely to have vendors in the community’s surroundings,
that sells every kinds of stuffs that also includes street foods. Vehicles were also one of the main causes
for the air pollution within our assigned community. The third one is the dirty surroundings, since our
community is a marketable place that has commercials and vendors, it is expected to have a massive
people around the community and cannot prevent them from throwing their garbage everywhere which
this kind of act will result to improper waste disposal. Informal vendors were also one of the main
reasons for the dirty surroundings around the community. And because of improper waste disposal,
drainage were blocked that will result to flooding. We also noticed that there were ineffective waste
collection system within the community. The use of bio and non-biodegradable waste were not properly
implemented, and instead the wastes were just left exposed at the side of the road that may cause a
bad health for the local community. Blighted street environment were caused by the vendors that
destroys the image and the accessibility of the street. Last is the lack of open space/parks in the
community which is important for a community to be functional and the community also lacks of buffer
zones.
FINDINGS: PHYSICAL + VISUAL + SOCIO-ECONOMIC

Urban Constraints/Challenges

Our last findings is the physical, visual, and economic of our assigned Community. As we all know
Quiapo is not that safe to roam around, as what people have said, it is a crime ridden area. The buildings
lacks of architectural characters which is its functional character, associated character, and personal
character that helps us understand the anatomy of the design of the building. The site lacks of urban
furniture that gives the site a more attractive look and lack of unifying elements that makes the
community be recognized as one. Poor concrete surface condition of streets that when if it rains it gives
people a hard time to walk around and be a hassle for people passing by. We also noticed cases of
violation of traffic rules and ordinances, and insufficient parking areas/facilities. Unsystematic parking at
the side of Quezon Avenue since it is only a one way road, there should no any vehicle parked at the side
of the road. The Vehicular and pedestrian corridor conflicts due to the presence of vendors, pedestrian
corridors were occupied, and people were now walking at the vehicular road that causes the flow of
traffic around the area that results to congestion. Poor pedestrian traffic which we have noticed people
were crossing everywhere, not minding the proper use of pedestrians. As what we have noticed with
our assigned community as a whole, we’ve noticed it has an unattractive urban image due to the
presence of vendors, massive people, and every kinds of establishments around the community.
