Why in the US?

The Reality In The U.S. was and is:

!  European style mixes have become prevalent.

!  The industry is changing and mix crushing,
achieving bonus and avoiding penalties are huge
issues.
!  Joint construction is poor and usually the first
area to fail.
!  TAC is critical – temperature sensitive.
!  The industry is looking for new ideas.

Colorado DOT introduced a cold joint density

requirement of 88% on state work.
18 months after implementation, no contractor had
been able to achieve the joint density spec and were
factoring in penalty costs to the job.
Brannon S&G using a Hamm HDO90V was able to
consistently achieve joint density between 89% -
91%.
CO DOT continues to enforce the written specification
while promoting the “Ozzie” as the only proven solution
to their requirements.

PA Turnpike – Unsupported Edge

Better Consistency across
full width of mat
Why is this so?

!   With constant Vibration the

material will eventually give
!   With constant Oscillation the
drum will eventually give
!   If the mat can be squeezed
the Oscillation drum will
continue to work
!   If the mat is fully compacted
the Oscillation drum will
scuff but not cause damage
to the mat
!   The end result is consistent
density numbers across the
width of the mat
Spec. Changes

Changes to PA Turnpike Manual

Specifications revised in Section 401:

“Use vibratory rollers only when permitted by a DOT
representative and only to compact authorized lifts of
bituminous concrete base course material or authorized
lifts of binder course material 3 inches or greater in
depth”.

“Oscillatory rollers that do not impact will be
permitted as intermediate or finish rollers for all
courses”

breakdown and the other in finish. Failed continuously
to pass on test strips over a two day period.

HD O120V, in breakdown did improve test strip

numbers…But not enough.

HD O120V in the second position. The joint target

density number of 90% was achieved and/or
exceeded on all test passes.

Competition
Where can it be used?
!   Excellent for finish surface for
smoothness
!   Good surface sealing of mixes
!   Ideal for hard to compact
mixes (SMA, OGFC, RCC, High
polymer or rubber content)
!   Best compaction results on
thin course surfaces
!   Excellent longitudinal
evenness (no buckling)
!   No grain crushing on joint
compaction (hot on cold)
!   Helps seams for optimum
impermeability
Why Bring to The US?

!   The industry has changed and grain crushing,

achieving bonus and avoiding penalties are a huge
issue

!   Joint construction is poor and usually the first area

to fail
!   Some States starting to require joint density requirements
with penalties / incentives

!   TAC (time available for compaction) is critical –

temperature sensitive

!  Contractors want solutions!
