Why is Urban Restoration
necessary for this
location?
It is necessary to maintain local ecosystem
services which in turn allows for the
persistence of functional diversity of the
community. Ecosystem services include
cultural, provisioning, regulating, and
supporting variables which are defined as
natural services that benefit humans (1).
The Convention on Biodiversity aims to
restore "at least 15% of degraded
ecosystems by 2020" (2).  woods is just what the doctor ordered
Like many urban areas worldwide, this
intersection has been heavily influenced by
human activity what with the construction of
apartment buildings, plazas, and a storm
water canal around it. 
In this case, the Miyawaki Method of the
Potential Natural Vegetation concept will be
implemented wherein different types of
natural and native vegetation are to be
planted closely and randomly at this
restoration site to mimic a natural forest
system (3).

Restoration Plan
Around the Storm Water
Canal...
The restoration plan will be implemented
on both the left and right side of the
storm water canal on the northeast
corner of Jane Street and Wilson Avenue.
This plan aims to restore local ecosystem
services to maintain the communities
functional diversity.
Restoring the Left Side of the
Canal:
Plant native Black Willow, Bur Oak,
and White Pine along the sidewalk,
and along the canal bank. Black willow
is flood tolerant which is suitable for
this low lying area, and bur oak and
white pine are recommended for
open spaces with variable soil
conditions (4).
Create a dirt path on the left side of
the canal and add benches and picnic
tables along it.
Restoring the Right side of
canal:
Remove concrete squares in grass.
Line current walkway with flowerbeds,
and line edges of parking lot with
Sugar Maple trees.
Create a community garden with 10
soil plots in the southeast corner for
local apartment residents.
Ecosystem Services
to be Restored
CULTURAL
Cultural ecosystem services to be restored
include: recreation, and spiritual healing
through forest bathing (5). This will be done
through increasing canopy cover by planting
trees, and adding paths for locals to walk
along, as well as benches and tables for
people to sit among the greenery.
SUPPORTING
Supporting ecosystem services to be
restored include: primary production by
plants, increased soil formation, hydrologic
and nutrient cycle maintenance. This will be
done through planting trees and flowers
which will increase primary production of the
area, and support the hydrologic and
nutrient cycle through processes like
photosynthesis.
PROVISIONING
Provisioning ecosystem services to be
restored include: fruits and vegetables for
local food production. This will be done by
creating the 10 soil plot community garden
which  can provide locals with fresh fruit and
vegetables they will be able to grow
independently.
REGULATING
Regulating ecosystem services to be
restored include: pollination! This will be
done by implementing flower beds with
flowers suitable for insects, like bees, to
pollinate the community garden.
