Call to Worship: Psalm 118:19-29 Worship in Song

19
Open for me the gates of the righteous; Closing prayer and sending
    I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.
20
This is the gate of the Lord
    through which the righteous may enter.
21
I will give you thanks, for you answered me;
    you have become my salvation. Notes:
22
The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
23
the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24
The Lord has done it this very day;
    let us rejoice today and be glad.
25
Lord, save us!
    Lord, grant us success!
26
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    From the house of the Lord we bless you.
27
The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us.
With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession
    up to the horns of the altar.
28
You are my God, and I will praise you;
    you are my God, and I will exalt you.
29
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
As they approached Jerusalem and
came to Bethphage on the Mount of
Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying
to them, “Go to the village ahead of
you, and at once you will find a donkey
tied there, with her colt by her. Untie
them and bring them to me. If anyone
says anything to you, say that the Lord
needs them, and he will send them
right away.” ~Matthew 21:1-3

Palm Sunday was not the first time a king rode on a donkey or
mule. In choosing to ride a donkey into Jerusalem, Jesus
emphasized the name spoken of in Isaiah regarding the Messiah—
Prince of Peace. Jesus entered Jerusalem to usher in real, lasting
peace between God and mankind. According to the passage
above, Jesus’ instructions have the disciples bring both mother
and colt to Jesus. They are saddled with coats and go into town
with Jesus riding. What is the significance of two donkeys?
Jesus was making a statement for all to see. People on the road
probably asked, “Why are there two donkeys?” The mother
represented the Old Covenant which revealed our sin even while it
pointed to Jesus being the Messiah. The colt represented the New
Covenant that would be establish between God and man through
His shed blood bringing peace. In Jesus the Christ, the Old and
New Covenants converge, and Jesus accomplishes what no other
man could do by truly reconciling man to God.
