3. Perform tasks related to the System and Utility Software

What is a Software?
Software refers to the applications or programs that can’t be touch but can be seen via a display and can
be used via interacting with its GUI. They are instructions and are used by people for many various
reasons. Software depends on the hardware, and a hardware is useless without a software.
Types of Software
1. System Software
2. Application Software
3. Malware

1. System Software
Software that directly operates the computer hardware, to provide basic functionality needed by users
and other software, and to provide a platform for running application software.

Types of System Software

1. Operating System (OS)
2. Device Drivers
3. Utilities

Operating System

The most important software on a computer. It controls the workings of a computer, a program that
controls and manages the hardware connected to your computer. It serves as a platform for application
software and is also a collection of other software designed in managing the various hardware. It also
creates the file system that determines how your data is stored within a storage device.

 Provides User interface

 Provides utilities to configure your system
 Helps manages computer resources (hardware)
 Helps secure data by controlling user access to a computer

Examples: Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Mac OS X Snow leopard, Ubuntu, Fedora

NOTE: All Operating System started from a developers’ console software called UNIX.

The Big Three of Operating System

Microsoft Corporation (commonly referred to as Microsoft or MS) is an American multinational
technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, that develops, manufactures, licenses,
supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics and personal computers and services. Its
best known software products are the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems, Microsoft Office
office suite, and Internet Explorer and Edge web browsers. Its flagship hardware products are the Xbox
video game consoles and the Microsoft Surface tablet lineup.

As of 2016, it was the world's largest software maker by revenue, and one of the world's most valuable
companies.

Apple is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, a

suburb of San Jose, that designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and
online services. Its hardware products include the iPhone smartphone, the iPad tablet computer, the
Mac personal computer, the iPod portable media player, the Apple Watch smartwatch, and the Apple
TV digital media player.

Apple's consumer software includes the macOS and iOS operating systems, the iTunes media player, the
Safari web browser, and the iLife and iWork creativity and productivity suites. Its online services include
the iTunes Store, the iOS App Store and Mac App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud.

Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in April 1976 to develop and sell
personal computers.
Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open-source
software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux kernel, an
operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The Free Software
Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to describe the operating system, which has led to some
controversy.

Linux was originally developed for personal computers based on the Intel x86 architecture, but has since
been ported to more platforms than any other operating system. Because of the dominance of Android
on smartphones, Linux has the largest installed base of all general-purpose operating systems.

Why Linux is special from Windows and Mac?

Linux has an open-source and free kernel (essential part of an OS) which other programmers can use
and modify it to their needs.

Linux has many distributions but the 10 previously shown are the very famous ones.
Some programming courses teaches you to develop your own OS!!

Linux is also the one responsible for the Android Operating System we are using in our Mobile Phones
today!

NOTE: For Windows, the most famous of their OS are Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP,
Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, and the latest and final OS is Windows 10.

Activity 7.2: My Understanding of the Lesson

Answer the following questions base on your understanding of the topic you read earlier about
the Storage Devices. Write on a separate sheet of paper make sure to write your name and
section or compose a document and send it to the messenger of your teacher with Filename as
Name of student-Module7-Activity 2

1. Who are the Big Three of Operating System?

2. Why is Linux different from Mac and Windows OS?
3. List down five comparisons of Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Refer to the chart.
4. What are the two types of Microsoft Windows OS?
5. What are the three types of Software?
Device Drivers

You have learned that a computer needs both the hardware and software for it to function properly.
You also learned that there are several parts in a System Unit asides the CPU that are essential to make
a computer work with each of it has its own functions. Most Hardware needs a software for it to
function. That software is called the Device Drivers. This is installed in your OS so that your OS can
recognize the hardware and utilize/managed it.

The main purpose of device drivers is to provide abstraction by acting as a translator between a
hardware device and the applications or operating systems that use it.

There are two types of Device Drivers

1. Auto-installed drivers
2. Manually installed drivers.

Auto-installed Drivers

As the name suggests, this are drivers that are automatically installed once you plugged in the hardware
to the system unit. These are very simple software and are also considered Plug and Play (PnP).
Examples:
1. External Storage Devices 5. Webcam
2. Mouse 6. Gaming Devices
3. Keyboard 7. Digital Camera/Camcorder
4. Monitor

NOTE: You’ll notice if it’s an auto installed driver if you plug it in on your computer and you see a display
message. “Installing driver”

Manually Installed Drivers

This are drivers that are needed to installed manually in an Operating System unless the Operating
System has built-in drivers. All drivers here are the software of very important System Unit part and
without it your OS will not be able to read/utilize the component.

Examples:
1. Motherboard Driver – Contains software for the motherboard itself (and some built-in utilities)
2. GPU Driver (Video Card) – For the graphics of the video card. An important driver especially if
the System Unit has a Video Card Peripheral. (Includes the built-In GPU of the CPU).
3. LAN/WLAN Driver – This is needed to connect to a computer network (LAN), and for mobile
computers like Laptops WLAN driver is what makes them capable connecting to Wi-Fi.
4. Sound Driver – This software is installed in order for sound devices like Sound card to be used
properly.
5. PCI/PCIe Driver – Enables the OS to recognize hardware attached to the PCI/PCIE slot.
6. Chipset Driver – This is the software for the Chipset of the Motherboard (North and South
Bridge, BIOS)
7. Printer/Scanner Driver – This is important for OS to recognize and use Printers and Scanners.

Things to remember:
1. The Motherboard driver has lots of other drivers that comes in it.
2. The Motherboard driver of today has also integrated GPU driver for their built-in display GPU.
3. Drivers doesn’t require licenses and can be used multiple times as long the driver you are
installing is the exact driver for the part.
4. Most Component Manufacturers include their drivers in a DVD or you can download it manually
in their website.

One Last Reminder

How to check the Drivers Installed in your computers.
For Windows that is the software called “Device Manager”

Activity 7.3: My Understanding of the Lesson

Answer the following questions base on your understanding of the topic you read earlier about
the Storage Devices. Write on a separate sheet of paper make sure to write your name and
section or compose a document and send it to the messenger of your teacher with Filename as
Name of student-Module7-Activity 3

1. What is the difference of an Auto installed driver to a Manually Installed Driver?

2. What is a Device Driver?
3. Give three examples of Manually installed drivers.
Utility Software

Utility software is system software designed to help analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a
computer. It is a type of system software, used to support the computer infrastructure. It can be called
as Maintenance Software of a Computer.

Types of Utility Software

1. Anti-virus utilities scan for computer viruses.

Ex: Avira, Avast, SmadAV, Windows Defender

2. Archivers output a stream or a single file when provided with a directory or a set of files. Archive
suites may include compression and encryption capabilities. Some archive utilities have a separate un-
archive utility for the reverse operation.
Ex: WinRar, 7zip

3. Backup software makes copies of all information stored on a disk and restore either the entire disk
(e.g. in an event of disk failure) or selected files (e.g. in an event of accidental deletion).
Ex: Windows Backup, Comodo

4. A disk utility is a utility program that allows a user to perform various functions on a computer disk,
such as disk partitioning and logical volume management, as well as multiple smaller tasks such as
changing drive letters and other mount points, renaming volumes, disk checking, and disk formatting,
which are otherwise handled separately by multiple other built-in commands. Each operating system
(OS) has its own basic disk utility, and there are also separate programs which can recognize and adjust
the different files systems of multiple OSes. Types of disk utilities include disk checkers, disk cleaners and
disk space analyzers

Disk Cleanup – cleans unused files or trash files in a hard disk.

Disk Checker – Checks the health and status of your hard disk.
Disk Partitioning tools – Partitions hard drive and formats it.
Disk defragmenters – Detect computer files whose contents are scattered across several locations on
the hard disk, and move the fragments to one location to increase efficiency.

Activity 7.4: My Understanding of the Lesson
