Knowledge-Based Supply Chains and Economies: The Relation with the Emergent

Technologies and Other Current Issues

Knowledge-based supply chains are those with an intensive use of cutting-edge technologies and
highly-focused on data, information, knowledge and human skills as the basis for innovative
operations, playing a relevant role in the context of the knowledge economies’ strategies. Into this
context, the emergent technologies of Industry 4.0 play a crucial role in order to generate
innovative supply chain’s processes such as procurement, manufacturing and delivery, which
directly impact on the improvement of the operations and supply chain performance. Also, current
issues related to resiliency and sustainability in supply chains, may be benefitted with smarter and
innovative supply chain’s processes. Therefore, for this special issue, papers approaching the
relation between the emergent technologies and knowledge-based supply chains are expected.
Moreover, papers showing the relations and impacts of knowledge-based supply chains for more
sustainable and resilient supply chains are also desired. Following this purpose, below are the
potential main topics for this special issue but not limited to:

 The application of cutting-edge technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence, big data


analytics, internet of things, machine-learning, robotics, additive manufacturing, virtual
reality) as supporters and levers for the development of knowledge-based supply chains.
 The role of knowledge-based supply chains for more sustainable supply chain’s
processes.
 The relation between knowledge-based supply chains and the resilience improvement
 The relevance of information and knowledge management for the knowledge-based
supply chains.
 The influence of knowledge-based supply chains with the supply chain processes’
performance
 The creation of knowledge-based supply chains in the knowledge-based economy’s
strategies
 Advantages of knowledge-based supply chains for the business competitiveness
 The role of human resource development for the knowledge-based supply chains
 Supply chain and operations management strategies in the context of knowledge-based
economies trend
 Innovation and startups in knowledge intensive supply chains

Papers must strictly follow the guidelines of the Operations Management Research – Springer
Nature.
