Dear Collector,
As you read this letter the final
touches are being made to
Australia 99 – the World Stamp
Expo to be held in Melbourne
from 19 to 24 March.
The Organising Committee has
worked for more than three years
to design an exhibition for the
new millennium.
Without a risk of exaggeration I
can say that this will be the most
spectacular stamp exhibition ever
held. The first thing that will
impress you when you enter the
Expo is the fleet of 22 sailing ships
and an ocean liner inside the
Exhibition hall. It is breathtaking.
The competitive exhibits are of
the highest international standard,
and of particular interest to me is
the new class of Social Philately.
Of course, the Court of Honour
will house some philatelic ‘gems’
as well as exhibits of widespread
general interest.
You will be impressed by the new
technology on display and in
operation. We have the latest
printing press on site printing
stamps, an E-stamp centre, and a
huge internet centre allowing you
to visit stamp sites the world over.
I am also delighted with the
attention given to children. We
have a Pirate Ship for the younger

children, Treasure Island, where they
can receive expert advice from

The Court of Honour will
provide some spectacular displays,
including the Smithsonian
Institute’s RMS Titanic exhibit
which retraces the last hours in
the ship’s mail and telegraph
room. Other displays include
major exhibits from three royal
collections including ten frames
on loan from Her Majesty The
Queen; the official IOC Olympic
exhibit; some colonial Australia
‘master forgeries’ from the Royal
Philatelic Society’s collection;
several Australian exhibits; and
the collection of rock singer
Freddie Mercury.
Younger collectors and children
will also have special areas with
activities designed to introduce
them to stamp collecting and further
their interest in stamps. A Pirate

pirates and interactive games will
hold the attention of younger
children, while on ‘Treasure Island’
older children can speak with
Australia’s leading young collectors,
play a life-size board game about
the ups and downs of collecting,
and test their knowledge against
the computer.
A pirate ‘Loot Bag’ including a
pirate flag, ‘pieces of eight’
(chocolate coins) and items to help
young collectors get started (valued
at $14.95) will be on sale only at
Australia 99 for $4.95.
In addition to the overall
maritime theme, each day will have
an activity theme, beginning with
Ships Day on 19 March, then Navy
Day, Family Day, Olympics Day
and Forgeries Day. The final day,
24 March, will be Awards Day.

Postmarks reflecting each of
these days, as well as an Australia
99 postmark, will also be
available to collect.
Several commemorative stamp
issues and products will be
officially launched during the
Expo, including an issue of
Australian maritime stamps
featuring the Polly Woodside, the
Enterprize, the Alma Doepel and
the Lady Nelson.
The 45c Polly Woodside stamp has a
special tab with the Australia 99
logo printed on it and also forms
part of a Joint Miniature Sheet with
Ireland. A philatelic rarity, both
postal administrations had been
working separately on designs
celebrating this famous ship and
decided to incorporate these in one
miniature sheet.
Similarly, a Joint Miniature Sheet
between Australia and Canada will
include two separate designs
celebrating the Marco Polo. This
miniature sheet will be printed in
Canada and so will feature
different perforations to the
Australian sheet stamps previously
issued on 15 January 1998.
Two miniature sheets, each
containing three stamps from the
famous 1963-64 Early Navigators in
Australian Waters series, will be
released at Australia 99. In addition,

an imperforate version of the
miniature sheets will be available
and visitors to the Expo will be able
to perforate the stamps themselves
using machinery on site.
A Portfolio, Celebration of the Seas,
will include mint maritime stamps
from many of the participating
postal administrations.
A new frama featuring a Tiwi
design will be available with a
special edition cliché bearing three
ships printed in red. Four frama
machines will be set up at
Australia 99 to issue this design,
which will not be released in other
frama machines until later in the
year. A monotel machine (the first
in Victoria) will also be set up at
the Expo and will print the literal
‘Australia 99’ on monotel labels.
For six days in March, Australia 99
will be the focus of the philatelic
world – a showcase of stamp
collecting, technology and design.

route from England to Sydney, and 1980s and now sails in Port Phillip Bay. Enterprize is a replica of a tops’l schooner built in Hobart in 1829,
whose mooring in the lower reaches of the Yarra on 30 August 1835 established the founding of Melbourne.
She is currently moored at Williamstown for sailing in Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait. Lady Nelson, a replica
of a vessel launched in 1798, was the first vessel to explore Port Phillip Bay and was instrumental in establishing

maritime heritage theme of
Australia 99, Celebration of the Seas
is a collection of current maritime
stamps from thirteen postal
administrations.
This joint collection recognises
that Australia, like every other
seagoing nation, shares its
maritime heritage with the world.
It highlights the common links
which the sea, and postage stamps,
provide between nations.
Stamps from Australia, Aland,
Canada, Faroe Islands, Guernsey,
Ireland, Jersey, Norway, Portugal,
Singapore, South Africa, Sweden
and the United Nations are included
in this limited edition collection.
The Australian stamp will also
have a sequential number printed in
the selvedge corresponding to the
number printed on the collection
cover. This unique feature will only
be available in the Celebration of the
Seas limited edition collection.
The collection comes in a gatefold
pack with beautifully illustrated
cover and separate acid-free album
sheets for the mint issue stamps.
Australia Post will receive the first
4,000 collections produced, each
featuring seventeen mint stamps
with a maritime heritage theme.
