Television began in Australia in 1956 and has had
a profound effect on our popular culture. One area in
which Australia has consistently produced world class
programming is the field of children’s television. An
entire generation of Australians has grown up with
the four very popular children’s television programs
featured in our May issue. We want these stamps to
be seen as a formal recognition of the excellence of
Australian children’s television, and of the performers
and producers who have made Australia a world leader
in this field.
Sport is another dynamic part of our culture and
this year, as the centenary of Test Rugby in Australia,
we celebrate the achievements and spirit of the game.
Four stamps will be issued to commemorate the event
in June – shortly before the centenary test match to
be played against England.
We also celebrate the centenary of the Perth Mint
with beautiful gold embossed foil stamps featuring the
original sovereign issued by the Mint.
To soothe the nerves after so much action, our July
issue continues the Nature of Australia – Coastal
definitives, shown through beautiful illustrations of the
coastline and creatures of Fraser Island.

AAT MAWSONÕS HUTS
Eighty-five years of exposure to harsh
Antarctic conditions had virtually
destroyed the historic baltic pine huts
built by Sir Douglas Mawson’s team as
the base for their 1911–14 Australasian
Antarctic Expedition (AAE). It was from
this Cape Denison camp that the men of
the AAE spent two years exploring the
frozen continent’s unknown interior and
that Mawson earned his status as one of
the giants of the heroic age of Antarctic
exploration.
Ongoing conservation work for
Mawson’s Huts began in 1962 and the
AAP Mawson’s Huts Foundation was
established to ensure that these unique
buildings are conserved in perpetuity
for the Australian people.

The first of the se-tenant 45c stamps
shows Mawson as a young man on the
eve of his departure for the Antarctic, the
vessel in which the expedition sailed and
an architectural drawing of the main hut.

The second stamp features the now
famous photograph by official
photographer Frank Hurley which
evokes the name given to Cape Denison –
‘Home of the Blizzard’ and the windiest
place on earth.

Huskies played a key part in the
exploration of Australia’s Antarctic
territory. This photograph was taken by
Mawson’s companion Xavier Mertz who,
along with Belgrave Ninnis, perished
during an expedition – leaving Mawson
to survive a lone trek across the icecap. A
Memorial Cross was erected on the site in
memory of Mertz and Ninnis.

Work undertaken by the conservation
team included new roof cladding,
rehanging the front door and repairing
the structural timbers inside the hut.
Computer technology was an integral part
of the latest expedition to Cape Denison
in 1997–98.

AAT ANARE BASE FDI COVERS
About 120 Australians spend a full year
at one of the four ANARE stations.
They are cut off from the rest of the
world for up to eight months, until the
arrival of supply ships at each station.
These people use the majority of
Australian Antarctic Territory stamps,
such as the four stamps issued last year
which illustrated the range of transport
used in the AAT.
Because of space limitations on
Antarctic supply ships, and restricted
facilities for processing large volumes
of mail at ANARE stations, no
philatelic mail is sent to the Antarctic.
Orders and covers submitted for
postmarking are processed in Australia.
Mail orders for 1998 AAT first day
covers showing the supply ship arrival
dates at each of the stations are now
being accepted. The first days of issue
are determined by the arrival of supply
ships at each station.

A different supply ship was used to
service Macquarie station. Supplies for
both Mawson and Casey stations were
sent by helicopter after a fire on board

Windjammer sailing ship. Port Victoria
was a common stop for Windjammers
carrying wheat between 1879 and 1949.
The last Windjammer, Passat, left on
1 June 1949.
In retrospect …
A permanent postmarker introduced
for the 125th anniversary of the
Township of Poowong was incorrectly
noted as being for the 126th
anniversary in the last issue of the
Bulletin. The postmarker became
available on 17 April.
The Irish Polly Woodside stamp featured
on the Maritime Links – Australia and
Ireland joint miniature sheet was
reported in the March–April Stamp
Bulletin as being 30.55 mm x 30 mm.
In fact, the stamp is 30 mm x 40.27 mm.
The March 22 Olympic Torch stamp
release was incorrectly listed in the
March–April Stamp Bulletin as having

Island District High School were asked to
illustrate their favourite festivals, and five
of these were chosen to feature in a special
issue of four stamps and a first day cover.
A dragon from the Community Arts
Festival by Fong Jason, aged 10, and a Red
Crab clutching an Easter egg by Siti
Zamaria Zainal, aged 11, are depicted on
the se-tenant 45c stamps. The
Community Arts Festival is an integral
part of the Territory Week Community
Festival which celebrates the Island’s
formation as an Australian territory.
The Hungry Ghost Festival is shown
on the 85c stamp by Tan Diana, aged 8.
This festival culminates in a special ghost
feeding ritual to avoid the malice of
despairing ghosts.
Anwar Ramlan, aged 10, designed the
$1.20 stamp which features the Hari Raya
Haji festival – marking the conclusion
of the annual pilgrimage to the holy city
of Mecca.
The first day cover, ‘Territory Day
Festival’, features a drawing by Tang Huoy
Wei, aged 12.

The tragic drama of the R.M.S. Titanic has
long captivated the world’s imagination,
but few people remember that the Titanic
was more than a luxurious vessel –
as the ‘R.M.S.’ denotes, she was a Royal
Mail Ship.
Shortly after the Titanic’s collision
with an iceberg on the night of 14 April
1912, the five postal clerks assigned to the

ship and a steward, Albert Tessinger, tried
desperately to save 200 bags of registered
mail by dragging these to the upper decks.
The mail bags were located very close to
the fatal gash in the Titanic’s hull.
The five postal clerks – three

3,364 bags of mail, was lost.
