Posted Aboard R.M.S. Titanic
7 April - 27 June 1999
The tragic drama of the R.M.S. Titanic has
long captivated the world’s imagination,
but few people remember that the Titanic
was more than a luxurious vessel –
as the ‘R.M.S.’ denotes, she was a Royal
Mail Ship.
Shortly after the Titanic’s collision
with an iceberg on the night of 14 April
1912, the five postal clerks assigned to the
The Titanic at sea
ship and a steward, Albert Tessinger, tried
desperately to save 200 bags of registered
mail by dragging these to the upper decks.
The mail bags were located very close to
the fatal gash in the Titanic’s hull.
The five postal clerks – three
Americans and two British – were among
those who perished when the Titanic sank
two hours and forty minutes after the
collision. The entire cargo, including
3,364 bags of mail, was lost.
