Letter to Readers
Dear Collector,
National Stamp Collecting Month is with us again this
October … a time to focus public attention on the hobby
3 and to encourage children to collect stamps.
8 One of the lessons we have learned from many years
9 seeking to encourage children to collect stamps is that there
10 is little point in telling children it is fun and interesting. The
14 secret is to have stamp subjects and design treatments which
appeal to children and their friends. If we can attract
children to the subject matter then we are in a much better
position to go to the next step and attract them to the
stamps and the hobby.
We are very conscious of this when selecting subjects for
our Stamp Collecting Month issue each year. The subject
must appeal to children, and it must have educational value,
because we want teachers and parents to support us in
encouraging children to collect the stamps.
This year’s issue, Small Pond, features a subject universally
loved by children – frogs. Did you collect ‘taddies’ as a child or
watch them swim in a jar in the classroom as they turned into
frogs? I think that is a very Australian experience, and one
that’s just as popular today as when you and I were children.
Don’t think for a moment that frogs appeal only to boys.
Literature shows that girls have a real interest in kissing frogs!
Occasionally I receive letters saying that the October
issues do not commemorate matters of significance and are
aimed at children rather than the majority of the population.
While I would argue that subjects like frogs, underwater
creatures, etc do deal with matters of significance, I accept
entirely that our October designs appeal to children – that’s
exactly what we intend them to do.
It may not be easy being green, but it can be a lot of fun.
Finally, allow me to wish you and your family a very
happy Christmas and a festive new year period.

I N THESE DAYS WHEN THE BIG
picture sometimes seems like the only
picture, we must take extra care to remind
ourselves that small is still beautiful. Small is
important too – with such microcosmic
environments as the small pond highlighted
in this year’s Stamp Collecting Month issue
becoming all the more urgent to preserve.
These small slices of life are also the small
habitats of some of our most appealing
natural wildlife.
The creatures living in and around the
Small Pond, the theme for Stamp Collecting
Month 1999, are intricately linked – be they
prey or predators. While the ‘small pond’
illustrated in the Stamp Collecting Month
miniature sheet is situated in the Kimberley
with its specific frogs and creatures, the scene
is representative of ponds across Australia.
Frogs feature dramatically in this Small
Pond environment. They can be predators in
this small habitat – feasting on the bees,
wasps, beetles, bugs, dragonflies and other
small, moving prey drawn to the pond –
or the prey of other creatures. Birds and
snakes are a frog’s worst enemies, and
dragonflies are also a threat to survival –
eating frogspawn and tadpoles.

The stamps in the Small Pond issue
feature the following creatures:
45c Magnificent Tree Frog
(Litoria splendida) – the largest tree frog in
Australia; the head and body are rich green
and bear small, scattered sulphur-coloured
patches, the backs of the thighs are yellow
or orange. It is found in the north-west of
Western Australia and the adjacent margin
of the Northern Territory. During the day it
enters caves and crevices beneath boulders.
It breeds early in the wet season –
December to January.
45c Sacred Kingfisher
(Todiramphus sanctus) – the Sacred
Kingfisher is a land kingfisher and the
most familiar of the smaller Australian
kingfishers. It is encountered widely and

is usually solitary, only pairing for
breeding. Afterwards the birds form family
groups for a short period before dispersing
in the autumn. Their diet consists mainly
of small reptiles, crickets, grasshoppers,
beetles and their larvae, and when the birds
are near water, fish, frogs and both
freshwater and saltwater crustaceans.
Sacred Kingfishers spend much of their
time perched on small, bare, fairly low
branches, sitting very still and occasionally
bobbing their heads as they watch for prey,
plunging down on to it, grasping it in their
bills and flying back up to a perch to eat.
50c Javelin Frog
(Litoria microbelos) – this frog with a long
and sharply pointed snout, is the smallest
45c Roth’s Tree Frog
(Litoria rothii) – a mainly tropical frog,
Roth’s Tree Frog calls commonly from
branches above water in a loud chuckle-like
call and often uses pandanus branches as a
refuge in arid conditions. The backs of its
thighs are predominantly black with a few
small yellow or orange patches while part
of the iris is a deep wine-red. Breeding
takes place between November to March
and spawn is deposited in small clumps in
temporary pools or ponds.
45c Dragonfly
(Rhyothemis graphiptera) – brightly
coloured and fast-flying dragonflies are
spectacular insects. The adults are often
found near streams, lakes or dams where

The creatures featured in the miniature
sheet are those in the stamps themselves as
well as a Cream-spotted Ichneumon
(Echthromorpha intricatoria), Green Tree
Ants (Oecophylla smaragdina), a red
Dragonfly (Diplacodes haematodes), a
caterpillar and a stick insect. A fig tree,
waterlilies, pandanus and grasses complete
the scene.
Foil has been added to the dragonfly’s
wings to give them a shimmering,
translucent look. This special foil on the
dragonfly wings only appears in the minia-
ture sheet, and not on the regular stamps.
Small Pond sticker activity book
A Small Pond sticker and activity book has
been produced to help children, students,
teachers and parents learn more about the
Small Pond environment and its
inhabitants. The book is priced at $7.95
and features colourful stickers and
interesting activities for young frog
enthusiasts to explore the world of frogs,
the small pond and stamps.

of the Australian tree frogs. It is tiny, light-
bodied and fast-moving, taking off through
the air like a well-aimed javelin. The Javelin
Frog is usually found among long grass in
marshy areas and around ponds and has a
high pitched buzzing call.
50c Northern Dwarf Tree Frog
(Litoria bicolor) – is a small, slender frog
with a narrow head. Mainly green in
colour, there is a flash of orange in the
groin and thigh. It is a wet dependent
species and can be found around
permanent or semi-permanent streams in
marshy areas from northern Western
Australia to Bowen, Northern Queensland.
The Dwarf Tree Frog is usually found close
to water, often among the foliage like
grasses and reeds, by day and night.
Occasionally it climbs as high as four
metres in trees.

they chase and catch other insects in
acrobatic displays. Dragonflies’ legs are
arranged so that they can seize prey such
as smaller flying insects in mid-flight. Their
wings are membranous, supported by a
complex and beautiful lacework of veins.
They have existed for millions of years in
forms very similar to those we now see.
They can twist and turn in flight, changing
direction so suddenly that their movements
cannot be followed by the eye. This skill is
essential for an insect that survives only on
prey caught in the air. The surface of each
of their huge globular eyes may contain up
to ten thousand individual lenses which
assists in their remarkable agility in the air
and their capacity to catch prey. Their
aquatic larvae feed on tadpoles.

A roll of 100 x 45c self-adhesive stamps

The 50c stamps will not appear on a
separate first day cover. The first day covers
will feature all the gummed stamps, the
complete miniature sheet, or the self-
adhesive 45c stamps only.

Kevin Stead – illustrator
Kevin Stead’s inspiration for the Small
Pond stamps came from a number of
sources, including real frogs. Said Kevin,
"The biggest challenge in designing the
miniature sheet was placing the various
creatures in an entire scene so they looked
aesthetically pleasing as well as making
them look good individually".
Once he has his material together, Kevin
selects elements such as a leg from one pic-
ture, the head from another and combines
them to form a complete image of the
creature. Kevin then starts sketching …
and keeps on sketching until he gets the
creature looking just right.
Once the individual sketches have been
completed, the scene begins to take life.
Kevin uses gouache (a thick, opaque paint)
to create his life-like colours by first apply-
ing a base colour with an airbrush and then
finishing the details with a hair-fine brush.
From start to finish, the Small Pond
miniature sheet took Kevin six months and
more than 250 pages of sketches to complete.

A range of eye-catching activities and
displays will be on show at the Thornlie
Square Shopping Centre, Thornlie Avenue,

Swanpex 99
On 23 and 24 October Swanpex 99 will be
held in the AMTC Building, 140 Royal
Street, East Perth.
South Australia
Congress 99 (Mt Gambier)
Congress 99 will be held at the Old City
Hall, Commercial Street, Mt Gambier from
2 to 3 October. Opening hours are from
10am to 4pm each day. A re-enactment of
the Coach Mail from Casterton will be held
at 10.30am on Sunday 3 October.
Maximum Cards
Salisbury Stamp Fair
The Salisbury Philatelic Society will hold
their annual Stamp Fair during Stamp
Collecting Month at the St Augustine’s
School Hall, 25 Commerical Road,
Salisbury SA from 10am to 4pm on 10
October. Stamp dealers will be in
attendance at the Fair and will hold two
stamp auctions. Raffles, door prizes and
refreshments will also be available.
New South Wales
APTA Centrepoint 99 Stamp & Coin Show
This major Show will be held from 8 to 10
October at the Grand Hall, Centrepoint
Convention and Exhibition Centre, 100
Market Street, Sydney. More than 20
international, interstate and local dealers
will attend and there will also be non-
competitive exhibits, door prizes, junior
stamp collector activities and much more.
Show hours are from noon to 6pm on
Friday 8 October, 10am to 5pm on
Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
Queensland
Caboolture Stamp & Coin Fair
The Caboolture Stamp Club will hold it’s
annual Stamp & Coin Fair at the
Caboolture Memorial Hall, Queensland,
on Sunday 24 October. Opening hours are
from 9am to 4pm.
APTA Stamp & Coin Show
The APTA Stamp & Coin Show will be
held at the Brisbane RNA Showgrounds,
Gregory Terrace, Fortitude Valley from 29
to 31 October. Entrance fee is $3.00 for
three days. Opening hours are Friday 29
October from 10am to 6pm, Saturday
from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from
10am to 4pm.

A E R O G R A M M E This year’s Christmas designs are by well-known
Australian artist, John Coburn. Coburn’s paintings favour large,
stylised shapes, often painted in glowing colours, radiating an intense
joy that has no counterpart in Australian painting. He is one of very
few painters who have succeeded in endowing non-figurative work
with genuine religious feeling.
Born at Ingham, Queensland, in 1925, Coburn began studying
art at the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College,
under the Ex-serviceman’s Rehabilitation Scheme after the war.
He had his first one-man show in 1957 at the Gallery of
Contemporary Art in Melbourne. He has since held many exhibitions
of paintings and tapestries in Australia and has also had exhibitions in
Paris, New York, Washington and Hong Kong. His most recent
exhibition, at the Australian Galleries in Sydney in May this year,
was highly successful, finding an enthusiastic audience among a
younger generation.
A series of seven Coburn tapestries, The Creation (1969), hangs in
the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington,
while two large-scale tapestry curtains grace the theatres of the
Sydney Opera House.

The Collection of
1999 Australian Stamps
Behind every Australian stamp is a great
Australian story … and the Collection of
1999 Australian Stamps showcases the
stories and designs of the gummed stamps
and miniatures sheets issued during 1999.
Superb photographs and illustrations
are the focal point of the collection,
complemented by in-depth background
information about the stamp issues and
their design.
The Collection of 1999 Australian
Stamps is the last Australian philatelic
chronicle for the century – a ‘must have’
for all stamp collectors. This beautifully
produced and designed publication covers
a diverse range of subjects, making it a
unique gift for family and friends.
This year’s topics include Small Pond,
Coastal Flowers, Personal Greetings,
Children’s TV, 50th Anniversary of the
Snowy Mountains Scheme, Olympic Torch,
Sailing Ships of Australia and Mawson’s
Huts among others.
Two versions are available: the popular
Deluxe edition and the more luxurious
Executive edition. Both editions house all
the Australian stamp issues and the one
Australian Antarctic issue released in 1999
While the contents of both are the same, the
Executive edition is bound in a luxurious
finish and has a matching protective case.
It is embossed with gold foil, with brass
corner protectors and gilt-edged pages.

APTA Centrepoint 99 Stamp & Coin Show
The Australian Philatelic Trader’s
Association (APTA) will hold a major
stamp and coin show in Sydney to coincide
with Stamp Collecting Month. The Show
will be held from 8 to 10 October at the
Grand Hall, Centrepoint Convention and
Exhibition Centre, 100 Market Street,
Sydney. More than 20 international,
interstate and local dealers will attend and
there will also be invited non-competitive
exhibits, door prizes, junior stamp collector
activities and much more.

The APTA Stamp & Coin Show will be
held at the Brisbane RNA Showgrounds,

on stamps, coins and phonecards.
Parking will be available at the
showgrounds for a small fee. Entrance fee

1 November 1999
that so many people have shared the
consciousness that a thousand-year time
cycle is about to end. Even the Old Royal
Observatory at Greenwich, although
maintaining that 2001 is the start of the
next millennium, is planning to celebrate
in 2000.
World media are making every effort to
capture the first light of the New Year by
television cameras in order to beam it
throughout the world. Exactly where that
might be is also the subject of controversy.
The difference between competing claims
might only be a matter of minutes or even
seconds. Media attention will undoubtedly

A special Celebrate 2000 Souvenir Cover,
featuring two Celebrate 2000 stamps and
featuring two postmarks celebrating the
old and new millenniums will be available
from the GPO Sydney on 1 January 2000.
Postmarked GPO Sydney, the nationally
available cover will have black postmarking
(refer mail order codes). A cover with red
postmarks will be available only from the
GPO Sydney on 1 January 2000 from 10am
until noon. Postmarked Celebrate 2000
Souvenir Cover will be priced at $1.15.
All private covers should be sent in
prepaid outer envelopes with inserted
cardboard for added protection. Endorse

NOTE: BIRDS ERROR
An error has been discovered on the 45c
Splendid Fairy-wren pre-stamped envelope
released on 12 August as part of the Birds
pre-stamped envelope issue.
Instead of the Splendid Fairy-wren (Malurus
splendens), an illustration of the Superb
Fairy-wren (Malurus cyneus) appears on the
envelope. When it is reprinted, the correct text
for the bird depicted will be inserted.
Santa Card
The Australian Philatelic Federation 1999
Santa Card illustration depicts Santa
arriving by speedboat. A 1999 Australian
Christmas stamp will be affixed to cards
and cancelled with a Christmas Hills
pictorial postmark featuring Santa. The
fully serviced cards may be personalised
with the recipient’s name, priced at $2.00
each as postcards, or sent blank enclosed
in a separate cover at $2.50 each or $3.00
for airmail overseas.

or postal note (stamps are not accepted

• From overseas: bank draft in Australian

Funds generated by this project are
shared between the Australian Philatelic

On 1 January 2000, Australia Post will issue
the first stamps of the year 2000 – the Face
of Australia issue. Comprising a sheet of 25
stamps, each stamp will show the faces of
ordinary Australians, representing all
Australians at the start of the year 2000.
Earlier this year, a national search was
conducted to be one of the ‘Faces of
Australia’. More than 30,000 entries were
received! The final selections have now been
made and will be announced on 20
November. A black tie dinner in Sydney will
be held on that evening to honour the ‘faces’
and their photographers.

for the special Face of Australia supplement
on Sunday 21 November in the following
newspapers: The Sunday Herald Sun (Vic),
The Sunday Telegraph (NSW), The Sunday
Mail (SA), The Sunday Mail (Qld), The

Small Pond
6 October – 9 January 2000
A look at the private world of water life as
imagined and observed in the artistic and
scientific past and present. Rare drawings
and museum pieces from the 19th century,
philatelic artwork that focuses on the frog,
kingfisher and insects and the beautiful
original artwork for the Small Pond stamp
issue by Kevin Stead. The exhibition will
also have a sound installation, a tadpole
aquarium, a map to follow and related
activities for a Small Pond competition
with great prizes!
Changing Displays
of the Commonwealth Collection
Adopted and Unadopted Artwork
Of special interest are the wonderful
unadopted Airmail design drawings by
R.A. Harrison of 1929, picturing flight over
the Australian landscape; F.D. Manley’s
unadopted design of 1934 for the
Centenary of Victoria; the stunning
adopted watercolours of Eileen Mayor for
the Australian Fauna series (1959-62); and
Eric Thake’s gouache for the 1969 50th
Anniversary of the First England-Australia
flight. Also on display are unadopted
Christmas designs by Australian abstract
artist Peter Powditch; Andrew Hopgood’s
vibrant and nostalgic paintings for the
1996 Australia’s Classic Cars; and Peter
Gouldthorpe’s watercolour for 1997
Creatures of the Night.

The special installation in the Court of
Honour features the 1956 Melbourne
Olympic Games’ 52 Australian Post office
pictorial postmarks. These were used at
temporary post offices established at
various Olympic venues, included the
MCG, Olympic Park, Richmond Park,
Heidelberg Village and Ballarat Village. The
display features the design development of
each postmark subject leading up to the
final version.

The 28th edition of The Australasian
Stamp Catalogue published by Seven Seas
is now available through Australia Post. It
provides an extensive catalogue of stamps
from Australia, Australian Colonies and
Territories, current and former Australian
dependencies, and Nauru. The new
catalogue contains listings and colour
illustrations of Australian Commonwealth
Pre-Decimal and Decimal stamps issued
from 1913 to July 1999.
Stamp values, issue date, perforations,
designer, printer, paper, printing process,
sheet format plus detailed background
notes for each stamp issue are all included
in the catalogue.
The catalogue is printed on heavy matt
art paper, which cuts down reflected glare
when working under artificial light. The
binding is stitched and glued to withstand
hard use.
