Dear Collector,
I recently experienced the thrill of
becoming a grandfather (Liam Patrick,
8lbs and doing well) and I wanted to
share with you one of my responses,
because it is linked to stamps.
After making sure that young Liam was
enrolled as a member of Essendon
Football Club, I ordered him a
Collection of 1998 Australian Stamps
– a memento of the year of his birth
and, I hope, the first in his lifetime
collection of the Album.
The Annual Collection began in 1981
and has become Australia Post’s flagship
philatelic product. We are very proud of
its high standard of design, printing and
production, which captures numerous
printing and design awards each year.
We consider the Annual Collection to
be a showcase of Australian stamps and
of the design and production skills of
Australia Post’s staff. It is written and
designed by Australia Post staff and our
design staff strive for the honour of
designing each year’s edition.
Almost 100,000 Australians obtain a
copy of the Album each year, in itself a
testimony to its enduring quality and
value. Many of them are active stamp
collectors, while others see the
Collection as a unique record of our
nation's history through stamps.

value having a collection of Albums
which record our beautiful stamps and
the stories behind them, the stories of
Australia, from the year of his birth on.
I imagine many of you are parents or
grandparents, uncles or aunts. If you

Christmas gift, and perhaps an
introduction to stamp collecting, why
not consider the Annual Collection? It
is of world class quality, is uniquely
Australian, and is a wonderful record of
our history and culture.

The October Coin, Note and Stamp
Show will be held at the Sydney

The 23rd Annual South Australian State
Philatelic Congress will be held on 14
and 15 November. The venue for the
Congress will be the YMCA Community
Centre, Candy Road, Happy Valley. Its
theme will celebrate the 50th anniversary
of the launch of the first Holden motor
car – the 48.215, popularly known as the
FX – in November 1948.
Souvenir covers and a postcard
featuring the FX Holden will be carried
from Woodville, where the first Holdens
were built, to the Congress. The mail
will bear the new commemorative
Woodville postmark and Congress
postmark, both of which will feature
the FX Holden.

On 18 October a new permanent
pictorial postmarker will be introduced
at Gembrook Vic 3783 for the opening
of the new section of the Puffing Billy
railway line.
Five thousand Puffing Billy postcards
will be carried along the new line from
Belgrave to Gembrook. The postcards
will bare a cachet and will be
postmarked with both the existing
Belgrave and new Gembrook postmarks,
which feature the same design.
Postmarked postcards are $2, including
postage and handling, and are available
from the Postal Manager Gembrook.
A new pictorial postmarker will be
introduced at Triabunna Tas 7190 on
26 October. The design depicts an
anchor to highlight the town’s
Tasmanian Seafarers' Memorial.
