_v| Working Stress Design: Allowable Stress 2 Actual Stress
|v] Ultimate Strength Design: Ultimate Member Strength 2 Required Member Strength
{__} Limit State Design: Ultimate Lateral Strength 2 Required lateral Strength
Both working stress and ultimate strength design methods are used for steel and reinforced
concrete structures. The limit state design method is not explicitly mentioned in the codes
> Material Strength:
For reinforced concrete structures
The working stress design limits the allowable compressive strength of concrete to be 0.45
of the specified concrete compressive strength. The allowable stress of the steel
reinforcement is limited to be approximately 0.50 of the specified yield strength. In the
ultimate strength design, the nominal strength of reinforced concrete members is based on
the specified concrete compressive strength and the specified yield strength of the steel
reinforcement
For steel structures:
The working stress design limits stresses to 0.66 of the specified yield strength for gravity
loads, A 30% increase in stress in permitted where wind or earthquake loads are considered
The normal strength of members based on the specified yield strength is used in the
ultimate strength design
2 Strength Reduction Factors ¢ :
Strength reduction factors are only applied in the ultimate strength design of steel and
reinforced concrete structures.
For reinforced concrete structures
= 0.80 (flexure with axial load)
@ = 0.80 (axial tension and axial tension with flexure)
= 0.70 (axial compression and axial compression with flexure, spiral reinforcement)
= 065 (others)
= 060 (shear and torsion)
= 0.70 (bearing on concrete)
