MGT 0090 Case Study: Video
Please watch this video to gain insight into this case study. It is an introduction only.
Waterloo Insurance Company looks after it’s employees who are on site 24 hours a day as their business
is a global business and serves clients in all time zones worldwide. For the convenience of the
employees there are drink/soda machines available on all floors of the 10 story building and in the
cafeteria on the main floor. These machines need to be operational and allow employees to pay for
their selections with:
employee badge
credit card
As the business analyst assigned to this solution, you are tasked with conducting elicitation sessions to
get information that will form the requirements to enable this functionality. Keep in mind that when the
employee badge is used for payment, requirements need to include having payroll deductions from the
employees pay for their purchase. Similarly, when a credit card is used for payment, there needs to be
real-time authorization of this purchase approval from the credit card company.
As this case study is fictitious, it is not possible to complete the work of elicitation, interviewing,
surveying, brainstorming, etc, with the actual staff at Waterloo Insurance Company. Instead, you will
work together, assuming roles outlined below, to enact elicitation sessions. It is understood that virtual
team work is required, and expected. Please see a section below on tools to utilize when working in
your virtual teams. The Business System Analyst (BSA) will utilize their judgement on the roles required
at their elicitation sessions, depending on the area for which they will be analysing. If, in the BSA’s
judgement another role(s) is required that is not listed below, then certainly invite the person to the
elicitation session. It is important to rotate roles when moving to the next assignment, to ensure
everyone gains an opportunity to be the role of BSA. If a person needs to assume more than one role
depending on the size of the team, then do so. Consider that you may not have to have all the
stakeholders involved, depending on your judgement of the elicitation technique, the chosen area to
analyse and the number of people available to you.
Alternate logistics:
If there is limited students enrolled in the course, there is the opportunity to enlist the help of work
colleagues, friends or family members to enact the roles of the listed stakeholders. Consider that you
may not have to have all the stakeholders involved, depending on your judgement of the elicitation
technique, the chosen area to analyse and the number of people available to you.
