LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 7

Polygons
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
1. identify polygons that are regular or irregular polygons and convex or concave
polygons;
2. investigate polygons that can be seen in their environment.
3. draw polygons that are regular polygons, irregular polygons, concave
polygons and convex polygons; and

A. Preliminary Activity
1.Greetings:

Good morning class. The student will say, Good morning sir!

How’s your day, students? The student will say, It’s good, sir!

Good to hear that.

2.Prayer:

Okay Class, before we start let’s pray. Let’s (The teacher will lead the short prayer.)
bow our heads and feel the presence of God.

3.Classroom Management
(The teacher will present the Classroom
Management Rules)
During the discussion please turn off your
microphone and camera and once I call your
name or if you want to answer or ask a
question kindly click the raise hand button.

Another thing, please avoid unnecessary

noises to avoid distraction.

And lastly, Please be respectful.

Are we clear of that?

Okay, Very Good.

4. Checking of Attendance The student will answer, Yes, Sir.

Kindly comment your name on the post where

this video is posted. That will serve as your
attendance for today.

5. Review

(Before proceeding to the lesson, the teacher Students will comment their names on the post
once they watch the video lecture.

will do a short review.)

So, is there anyone here who still remembers

the last topic?

Yes, ____.

Very Good! That is right.

The student will answer, “Yes, sir. On the

What do you recall about polygons? previous discussion, we talked about
polygons.”

Okay, very good. Our topic for today is the

continuation of the previous topic.” The student will answer, “I still remember how
to identify figures that are polygons and non-
polygons.”
Let’s Proceed.

6. Agreement

At the end of the lesson, the student should be

able to:
1. identify polygons that are
regular or irregular polygons
and convex or concave
polygons;
2. draw polygons that are
regular polygons, irregular
polygons, concave polygons
and convex polygons; and
3. investigate polygons that

can be seen in their

environment.

B. Motivation

Okay, class, let us have first a motivational

activity.

I will present a series of pictures and you are

going to look for polygons that are present in
the pictures.

In the 1st picture we have.

In this photo, do you see different polygons?

Can you point out where the polygons are?

Very good, you are right. Some polygons are:

that the students will see them)

The student will point out all polygons they

will see in the picture.

Next one,

We have a playhouse. Can you spot polygons?

Can you point out where they are?

Very good, that is right. Let’s trace those

polygons. (polygons will be highlighted on the
photo so that the students will see them)

The student will answer, “yes, sir.”

The student will point out all polygons they

will see in the picture.

The teacher will ask the students.

What have you noticed about the polygons we
see in the two pictures?

Very Good observation. The polygons you see

in the pictures have different classifications.
But, the question is, what are the
classifications of polygons? For you to find
out, let’s do have this activity.

The student will answer, “I notice that there

are polygons that have irregular shapes.”

C. Activity

Direction: Group the polygons that you think

have common characteristics. Level them
Team A and Team B.

(The teacher will show different polygons, and

students will group them according to their
common characteristics.)

(The teacher will ask)

The students will group the polygons.

How did you group the polygons?

Very good, that is right. As we can see,

polygons in team A have different measures of
sides, while in team B, the polygons have equal
sides and angles.

Now, we will study the terms that describe The students will answer, “I based on their
polygons in team A and polygons in team B. sides. In team A, their sides have different
measures while in team B, polygons have
equal sides.”
Are you ready?

The student will answer, “yes, sir!”

D. Analysis

(The teacher will start the discussion.)

The polygons in the team A are what we call

Irregular Polygons, and the polygons in the
team B are called Regular Polygons.

Regular Polygon is a polygon that has a

congruent sides and interior angles.
Examples:

College of Education

These are examples of regular polygon, as you

can see each polygon have equal sides and
equal angles.

Irregular Polygon is a polygon that has no

congruent sides and angles.
Examples:

Compare to regular polygons, irregular

polygons have different sides and angles.

(The teacher will ask the students)

Do you understand?
Republic of the Philippines

College of Education

Very Good students.

Little did we know, polygons can also be

identify based on where the angles point out
and what is their measure. They are called
convex and concave polygons.

A convex polygon closes in an interior area The students will answer, “yes, sir.”
without looking “dented.” None of its interior
angles point inward. It has no interior angle
greater than 180° .
Examples:

We can see in the examples that all interior

angles measure less than180° and they are
pointed outward.

A concave polygon is defined as a polygon

with one or more interior angles greater than
180° . There are at least one angle pointing
inward the polygons.
Examples:

F. Pimentel Avenue, Brgy. 2, Daet, Camarines Norte – 4600, Philippines

College of Education

In concave polygon we can see that there

is/are interior angle/s that are pointing inward
the polygons and it/they measure/s more than
180° .

Do you understand, class?

Do you have any questions?

Very good. It seems that you easily understand

what polygons are regular polygons and
irregular polygons the same with concave and
convex polygons. I think you are now ready for
our assessment. Am I right?

The students will answer. “yes, sir.”

“None, sir.”

E. Abstraction

(The teacher will ask the questions)

Again, what is the difference of regular The student will answer, “regular polygons
polygons from irregular polygons? are polygons that have congruent sides and
angles, while irregular polygons have no equal
sides and angles.”

Very good, that is right.

The student will answer, “concave polygons

than 180° while convex polygons, their angles

outward.”

“Yes, sir.”

Very good. It seems that you easily understand

what polygons are regular polygons and
irregular polygons the same with concave and
convex polygons. I think you are now ready to
level up our knowledge about polygons. Am I
right?

F. Application

Polygons are anywhere. Some are manmade,

and some are natural. They play an important
role in our life. Imagine a surrounding without
polygons, imageless. Everything seems
abstract.

(The teacher will give this activity.)

Activity 1: Draw me.

Draw 1 regular polygon, 1 irregular polygon, 1

convex polygon, and 1 concave polygon.

Activity 2: Find my worth.

Find a polygon inside your house. Take a

picture of it. Tell whether it is a regular,
irregular, concave, or convex polygon. Then,
state its importance in your house and for your
family.

IV. Evaluation
Let’s do this.
On a clean sheet of paper, answer the following questions.
I. Identify whether the polygon is irregular or regular, convex or concave.

V. Assignment
Make an advanced study about parts of a polygon.
