Cables Subjected to Concentrated Loads
If a cable is loaded with concentrated loads,
the geometry of cable will be a series of connected
straight line and it is deflected at the point of
application of concentrated load. The forces in any
member of the cable is solved using method of
joints. Take note that the cable is capable to resist
tension forces only, so always assume that the
cable is pulling. The following examples will help you
understand this section.

Cables Subjected to Distributed Load
For uniformly distributed (rectangular) load,
the cable will form a parabolic shape. The lowest
point of the cable (the vertex) is the location of its
minimum tension while its highest point is the
location of the maximum tension. The following
examples will help you understand the parabolic
cable.

Arches
Arches are generally designed to carry
compressive forces and dramatically decreases the
deflection of long span structures. The analysis of
arches is same as analysis of frames.
