Points to Remember
IMAGE- A concrete representation of a sense impression, a feeling, or an idea. Imagery refers to the
pattern of related details in a work. In some works one image predominates either by recurring throughout
the work or by appearing at a critical point in the plot. Often, writers use multiple images throughout a work
to suggest states of feeling and to convey implications of thought and action. Some modern poets, such as
Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams, write poems that lack discursive explanation entirely and include
only images.

DICTION- The selection of words in a literary work. A work's diction forms one of its centrally important
literary elements, as writers use words to convey action, reveal character, imply attitudes, identify themes,
and suggest values. We can speak of the diction particular to a character, as in Iago's and Desdemona's
very different ways of speaking in Othello. We can also refer to a poet's diction as represented over the
body of his or her work, as in Donne's or Hughes's diction.

FIGURES OF SPEECH- Also known as figurative language, it creates figures (pictures) in the mind of the
reader or listener. These pictures help convey the meaning and more vividly than words alone. We use
figures of speech in “figurative language” to add colour and interest, and awaken the imagination.
Figurative language is everywhere, from classical works like Shakespeare’s and the Bible, to everyday
speech, pop music, and television commercials. Figurative language means something different from (and
usually more than) what it says on the surface.

Activity 1: Imagine Imagery

Direction: Read the text carefully and use your imagination to fill in the specific images asked in the scene.

You are in the park. It may be a park in a city or a scenic area. There is a small pool of water in the center.
A large grassy area surrounds the water. In the distance there are picnic tables and barbecue grills. You
can see the lights over a sports area beyond the picnic tables.
What do you see? Are there people there? Are there children playing? Are people playing, swimming, or
fishing? Is the water frozen? What color is the grass? What activities are going on in the park? Do you see
people enjoying the day? What is the temperature? What do you smell? What feelings would you have if
you were in the park? How do the people in the park feel?
Now Inside the box, draw and write in vivid detail what you see in your mind’s eye, use imagery detail to
visualize how you imagined the park.

Activity 2: Your Words, Your Choice

Direction: Alter the diction of the paragraph by changing the words that are underlined, you can use the
dictionary to look for synonyms.
The Best Gift
The best gift that I ever had is the Limited-edition Harry Potter books box set in English
language. I received that gift from my parents on my birthday in 2019. Actually, I am an avid fan
of
Harry Potter. I collect many things about it including DVDs box set and the books in Filipino language, but
the
only one that I did not have and really needed was the books box set in English language.

In this statement, the word God

symbolizes strength, courage, and
protection. Duterte
incorporated some religious
aspects not only to show that he is
a follower of Christ but also to
create a deep sense of implication
of what he wants for the
Philippines. He used God’s hand as
his vision for the Philippines that is
to be a place of paradise. Knowing
that the Philippines has

Excerpt 3. But human rights cannot be used as a shield…To destroy the country, your country, my country.
______________
In this excerpt, President Duterte uses simile to connect the ideas of human rights to the idea of
shields. President Duterte is known for supporting unpopular choices like extra judicial killings (EJKs)
without giving people a proper process. To combat this, activists bring up the topic of human rights to
defend the victims of these EJKs, Duterte argues that human rights cannot be used as shield to punish
these people as if they go unpunished, they might influence others to do the same which will “destroy the
country”.
