In the 'So there I was, just minding my own business, department'

It was October and the year was
1976!
We were given a bit of a break
before the next joint session of
Congress convened for the State of
the Union message from President
Jimmy Carter. We were down in the
confines of our “secret” hiding place,
the basement, of the U.S. Capitol
building, in the Supreme Court
Chamber, then in the Capitol, where
the first telegraph message was sent
in 1844, by Samuel B. Morse.
Our daughter, Cody, Christy,
back then, always called the Capitol
building, “Daddy's castle” and I
knew just about everything about
that wondrous
building.
I even gave private tours back
then when there was a lull in the
riots and demonstrations of the
1970's and '80's. I had seen a lot of
famous people
protesting the war that I left behind
and chose a life of Law Enforcement.
Got the bruises and scars to show for
it. Mrs. Fisher, my dispensary nurse,
had sewn me up so many times that
we were on a first name basis!
Well, on this crisp October
night I received a message on my two
way, that I was to go to the Senate
side of the Capitol alcove and wait
for a special dignitary. I had already
briefly escorted the Shah of Iran for
a visit to the Senate, so I expected
something of that nature.
I quickly spit shined my shoes
and adjusted my kevlar vest to look
less bulky underneath my suit coat.
Not an easy task. The vests were
much larger back then. My “Lady
from Bristol” was tucked away in my
shoulder holster! I was perspiring
profusely as I ran up the stairs to be
at the Senate door. The
entrance doors are revolving so I
adjusted the latch to make the doors
open so a person could just walk
straight through.
I was always early to my posts
and would communicate through
my left sleeve which held my
microphone. The time was nearing
where I was to watch for a limousine
that contained my person of interest.
Little did I know that the limo was
going to be all white in color and
about 100 yards long, well, it seemed
that long!
The limo's position was
communicated to me every few
minutes so I would be ready to
meet and greet the occupant. Oddly
enough there were no sirens or
motorcade vehicles accompanying
the massive limousine as it barely fit
into the Senate alcove. The windows
were tinted so dark that I still was
not able to see just who I was to
escort to Senate Room S-207.
The vehicle finally came to
a halt and I reached for the door
handle but the door opened on its
own. The occupant had decided
to do it alone. I stepped back and
looked in utter astonishment. The
occupant reached for and grabbed
my arm and I escorted the occupant
up the short staircase into the Senate
side of the building.
My heart skipped a beat and
was pounding profusely. It was
HER! My Gosh, it was HER! I had
never imagined that this day would
finally arrive! She turned and asked
in her usual soft voice, how I was
doing and how my family was
doing. Apparently she had also had a
background history on me. I had to
look up at her as she was a bit taller
than me! I gushed out a reply to her
question, as I was stunned that she
knew about Lin and Cody (Christy).
She was dressed in a powder blue
full length dress and flat black shoes.
Thank goodness for that! He hair
style was the one that America grew
up with.
Lin of course, later became
Senator Gordon M. Trimble's office
manager and “Boswell” (James), if
you will, for the Senator. Gordon's
brother, Charlie, is the designer and
advance architect of the now famous

So there I was continued
GPS Trimble Navigation System. And Cody became
Senior House Committee Clerk for Representative
Helene Hale, of the Big Island, and now owns Shady
Rest R/V Park in Glasgow, MT.
Now room S-207 is only about 75 steps, as I recall,
from the entrance of the Senate side of the Capitol and
I swear my feet NEVER touched the Minton tile floor
as I escorted her to the meeting room. The door to
S-207 was slightly ajar and a face peeked out to see if
their special guest was arriving as planned. She talked
about the chilly night and told me that she would only
be about an hour or so and asked if I would wait for her
after the meeting. I assured her that I would.
The Senator came out as we approached and
greeted her with a soft, gentle hug. He asked me to come
in, but it was family business, so I stayed outside the
massive doors. A Churchill chair was set outside the
door for me, but I did not use it and
stood up, as I was accustom to.
I kept going over in my mind as to what could
possibly go wrong with this mission. I have escorted
first ladies and Secretary Kissinger before, but this was
HER.
I had admired this lady for many years and now
I got to actually have this honor. After about an hour
the door began to open and I stepped towards the
door, reaching for the handle. I stood at attention as
the roomful of people softly glided out of the meeting
room. They hugged the lady with a goodbye squeeze
and then the Senator shook my hand and my “date” for
the evening grabbed my arm again. She gently turned
me toward the exit and we were off again.

As I stated previously my feet never touched the
floor. We got to the exit and I asked her to wait while I
open the door to her limousine, which I did. I returned
to my “date” and escorted her to the vehicle and she
glided into the seat. One last handshake and a soft
spoken thank you and goodnight and then SHE closed
the door.
The limousine started to slowly move and she
waved goodbye and that was the last time that I saw
former First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis!
As the First Lady's limousine departed I walked
back towards Room S-207 and Senator Ted Kennedy
grabbed me and thanked me for my assistance. Little
did I know that from then on every Christmas I would
receive a Christmas card containing a $50 bill in it. I
would keep the card but returned the money to his
office.
I watched the filming of the movie F.I.S.T, starring
Sylvester Stallone, from Mr. Kennedy's office. Julie
Philips, my partner wanted to be as close as
she could get to “Sly”, so the Senator managed it. All in
all it was an adventure, one of many, that I will never
forget. No I did not even think of getting, the First Lady's
autograph. What a treasure that would have been.
After my escort duty with the former First Lady, I
drove the 32 miles down the Potomac to Virginia where
Lin was always waiting. I would not let her touch my
left arm for two weeks, because, well, SHE touched it.
Of course, many years later, Lin got even with me when
Actor Tom Selleck used our
boat to jump into the Ala Wai canal, in one of his
episodes of Magnum P.I. She had circled that spot on
the foredeck, where Mr. Selleck had stood.
