PART 1. EVALUATE

What is the usage of reciprocating pump?

A positive displacement pump which utilizes a plunger or piston to change a cavity's volume,
and produce a pressure differential. A plunger pump operates using the reciprocating motion of
plungers or pistons. Depending on the design of the pump, the use of a single or multiple
plunger may be used. Reciprocating pumps are employed when a precise volume of fluid must
be given, as well as when the needed delivery pressure is greater than can be accomplished with
other pumps. The fluid is propelled by a piston that moves inside a cylinder.

What is the working principle of Eductors?

Eductor works on Bernoulli’s principle. It states that an increase in the speed of a fluid occurs
simultaneously with a reduction in pressure. Refer to the simplified Bernoulli’s equation below
for an in compressible flow. From the equation it is clear that, when there is an increase in
velocity, pressure is reduced and vice versa. Eductor is a type of pump which works on the
‘venturi effect’ to pump out air, gas or liquid from a specified area. Eductor require only a
motive fluid or driving fluid for its operation, which allows it to use at any part of the ship
including hazardous areas. When the driving fluid is passed through the eductor at the required
capacity (which depends on the design of the eductor), a low pressure is created inside it. This
low pressure or vacuum enables the eductor to suck liquid or gas from a certain area. This liquid
or gas is pumped out through the driving fluid discharge.

What is the importance of having the right pumping pressure rate during loading operation?
The PSI rating of a pump is important because it signifies that the pump was built with materials
and intended to withstand a specified level of pressure. Pump operators, on the other hand,
should be equally concerned with the flow rate of a pump, which defines how much you want to
dispense, spray, or inject.

What is the purpose of stripping system on tanker ship?

A stripping system is an auxiliary device on cargo oil pumps which enables the continuous
discharging (unloading) of oil from tankers to take place without any manual intervention right
up to the end of the discharging operation. Stripping cargo tanks is carried out to ensure that as
much cargo as possible is discharged. Normally the vessel will use stripping pumps and lines for
this purpose as they will reach the last drop of cargo that the bulk discharge pumps cannot
reach.

What is enclosed space in ship?

It’s a shipboard space in which the atmosphere is oxygen-depleted, toxic and/or flammable.
Their characteristics include; unfavorable natural ventilation, limited openings for entry and
exit, not designed for continuous crew occupancy and includes, but is not limited to pump room,
cargo space, cofferdams, etc.

Compare and contrast direct main and ring main system.

The direct main system is made of lines that run longitudinally through the center tanks and
branch out to bellmouths in the center and wing tanks. The mechanism is straightforward and
may be found on several oil transporters. The ring main system is also known as the circular
system. This sort of pipe system can handle a variety of various types of oil. A specific tank can
be pushed out by a direct suction line or via another line via a cross-over. The method is
extremely adaptable.

Why is that tanker ships carry different type of pumps?

Tanks, pumps, and pipelines are standard on all tankers. Some tankers may transport a variety
of cargo grades at the same time and feature several cargo tanks as well as a complex pumping
and piping system to allow for a distinct handling process for each kind of cargoes, ensuring that
cargoes are not contaminated. A ship is made up of numerous sorts of fluids that move inside
various machinery and systems for cooling, heating, lubricating, and as fuels. These liquids are
circulated by several sorts of pumps, which can be operated independently by the ship's power
source or connected to the equipment itself.

Would you dare to enter an enclosed space which is not properly ventilated? Why?
No, because there is no ventilation, these enclosed spaces generate and store harmful gases,
which are either produced by the chemicals kept inside or leaks from pipelines. If a person
enters such an area without taking measures, he or she may become unconscious and, in
extreme cases, die. When an atmosphere-related limit is exceeded, regardless of the reason, all
people should immediately evacuate the space, and no one should enter until atmospheric
conditions have been restored to safe levels. The entry permission should be cancelled, and re-
entry should be prohibited unless a higher official authorizes it.
