LUKSONG BAKA

Luksong Baka is loosely translated in English as “Jump over the cow” it is a traditional
Filipino game that originated from Bulacan. It involves a minimum of 3 players and a maximum
of 10 players and involves them jumping over the person called the baka. The main goal of
the players is to successfully jump over the Baka without touching or falling over the baka.
RULES
At the start of the game, there should be one player that should be called Taya (IT), or in
this game the bakang lala (cow). The players should avoid falling over the baka player while
jumping over. The baka player will start in a Kneeling-down position ( a baka player bends
over with their hands placed on his knees). All players are to jump over the baka until all the
players have jumped. Once the first set of jumping over the baka is done, the baka player's
position will slowly rise after jumping over the baka player. Only the hands of the jumper may
touch the back of the person who is bent over. If a player fails to avoid contact or falls over the
baka, they will replace the baka player with a kneeling position, and the game continues until
all players decide to end the game.
Playing the traditional game namely luksong baka is an important part of the learning
process of an individual. The game is intellectually stimulating since it develops the mind and
broadens one imagination and creativity. Also, this is considered a good form of exercise which
4
helps in strengthening the muscles, making the body more flexible. enhancing the arm and leg
power as well as increasing the stamina of the body. Moreover, playing this game triggers
camaraderie and generates sportsmanship.

• There is no required equipment for luksong baka.

• The element of Health-related and Skill-related fitness required for this is Power.
• The main goal of the players is to successfully jump over the “Baka” without touching or
falling over him/her. That means the player should jump very high which will test his power.
• The tips I can give are to have a good take-off, keep your arms firm as you lean, and jump
high.
• Skills involve in playing Luksong baka
• Mobility- the player's ability to move easily and freely. The more agile the player is, the higher
he can push himself up.
• Stability- It’s the player's ability to keep his body parts steady, especially on his waist.
• Strength- once the player is stable, he can jump as high as possible without hitting the baka.
Physical activity simply means movement of the body that uses up energy. Walking, gardening,
sweeping and mopping the floor, climbing the stairs, playing soccer, or dancing are all good examples
of being active. Due to the rising technological advancement in our country, the physical
activities of teenagers have become limited and are often neglected. Few teenagers engage
in physical activities and outdoor sports. Most spend their leisure hours inside the house
playing computer games or games on gadgets and watching television and movies. This
sedentary lifestyle leads to poor health and limited activities.
Physical activity done at a moderate or vigorous intensity level is good for your health.
Moderate physical activities generally make your move. Even helping out with some of the
more active chores inside and outside your home like gardening can be good while vigorous
activities increase your heart rate and make you sweat and may let you enjoy being active
even more.
Moderate-intensity physical activities- are those that get you moving fast enough or
strenuously enough to burn off three to six times as much energy per minute as you do when
you are sitting quietly, or exercises that clock in at 3 to 6 METs. The intensity of physical
activity is at a moderate level when your breathing quickens, but you're not out of breath. You
develop a light sweat after about 10 minutes of activity. You can carry on a conversation, but
you can't sing.
Examples of Moderate-Intensity Physical Activities:
- Brisk walking - Water aerobics.
- Social or ballroom dancing - Gardening.
- Playing tennis (doubles) - Biking.
- Basketball Shooting
- Short distance Jogging
- Jumping rope
- Cleaning windows or floors
- Swimming
Vigorous-intensity physical activities are defined as activities that require the highest
amount of oxygen consumption to complete the activity. Vigorous-intensity activities—
sometimes called high-intensity activities—are physical activities done with a large amount of
effort, resulting in a substantially higher heart rate and rapid breathing. Your exertion would
be considered hard to extremely hard, making it difficult to speak in full sentences.
Examples of Vigorous Physical Activities:
- Carrying/pushing heavy loads
- Aerobics
5
- Playing Competitive Sports and Games
- Fast Cycling
- Fast Running
- Fast swimming
- Hiking with a heavy backpack/ Long distance jogging
Some Benefits of Engaging Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activities

• It generates more energy expenditure

• Contributes to obesity prevention and muscular and bone development.
• Reduces anxiety and stress;
• Improves self-esteem, mood, and concentration
• Reduces the risk of chronic disease
• Reductions in cardiovascular disease
• Reductions in diabetes, mortality, and even cancer.
• Improves heart health and fitness
• Develops strong muscles and strong bones
