Sailing

Sailing employs the wind to

propel a craft on the surface
of the water, on ice, or on
land over a chosen course,
which is often part of a larger
plan of navigation.
Sailing
Sailing relies on the physics of sails as
they derive power from the wind,
generating both lift and drag.

The forces transmitted the sails are

resisted by forces from the hull, keel,
and rudder of a sailing craft, by
forces from skate runners of an
iceboat, or by forces from wheels of a
land sailing craft to allow steering
the course.
17th Century: originated in Holland

1660: It was introduced from England by Charles II, and eventually spread to the
American colonies

1851: Members of the NYYC raced the schooner America against British competitors
around England's Isle of Wight. Victorious, they deeded their trophy to the NYYC.
It became known as the America's Cup, giving its name to the oldest and most
prestigious event in international sailboat racing.

1900: Sailboat racing has also been part of the Olympic Games since 1900; at present
Olympic sailors

1980: radical changes in boat design, lawsuits involving Cup teams, and even charges of
espionage and sabotage have transformed and roiled Cup competition

1987-2017:The United States regained the Cup in 1987, then lost it to New Zealand in
1995. New Zealand lost to Switzerland in 2003, the United States held it
from 2010, and New Zealand regained it in 2017.

Fleet Racing
Sailing
The most common type of sailing race that can compete in is
a fleet race. Put simply, a fleet race can be from a handful
to hundreds of sailboats racing around a specified course.
The course is usually a set of landmarks and can be as small
as a lake and as large as an ocean (e.g., the Volvo Ocean
Race).

Fleet races have two major distinctions:

● A one-design fleet race
● A handicap fleet race
The most popular type of sailing races: Sailing
Match Racing

when two sailboats that are exactly

the same in terms of design, brand, and
anything else race each other in a
course race.

Similar to fleet racing, the match race

also takes place in a so-called course
with specific locations to reach.
The most popular type of sailing races: Sailing
Team Racing

A team race works by divvying up points to each

team based on the sailboats that cross the
finish line in a certain order.

For example,
the first sailboat receives one point, the
second sailboat receives two points, and so on.

After every single sailboat has crossed the

finish line, the points are tallied up per team and
the team with the lowest number of points wins.
The most popular type of sailing races include:
Regatta Racing
Sailing
The term comes from the Venetian language, with
regata meaning "contest" and typically describes
racing events of rowed or sailed water craft,
although some powerboat race series are also called
regattas.

A regatta often includes social and promotional

activities which surround the racing event, and except
in the case of boat type (or "class") championships, is
usually named for the town or venue where the event
takes place.
The most popular type of sailing races include: Sailing
Offshore/Oceanic Racing

Offshore racing requires good experience in operating

and navigating a sailboat in open waters as well as
having the endurance to sail day and night.

Most offshore races exceed 800 miles in length.

It’s not uncommon for sailboats to compete in a

trans-Atlantic sailboat race with one of the more
notable races being from the Canary Islands to the
Caribbean.
The most popular type of sailing races include:
Paralympic Racing
Sailing
Paralympic racing is a type of sailing race that
encourages those with disabilities to compete in
sailing races.

This types of races can vary between the types

we’ve already covered while most are fleet or team
races.

Based on the abilities of the crew member, teams are

matched up and allowed to compete with one
another.
The most popular type of sailing races:
Twilight Racing Sailing
twilight racing is a race that wraps up toward the end of the
evening and includes a social gathering.

There can be any number of sailboats that participate in a

twilight race as long as they finish the course and get to a
common location for a nice social evening for all the competitors.

Almost without exception, twilight racing happens in the summer

months. After giving it your all during a race, finishing with the
sun going down.

Twilight races often times include the use of two sails and
sometimes allow for the option of using a genoa or spinnaker sail.

Powerboat, also called Motorboat, a relatively small
Power Boating
watercraft propelled by an internal-combustion or electric
engine.

Most motorboats have space for six passengers or fewer.

Motorboats are used recreationally for traveling on water
(cruising) and for the enjoyment of such sports as fishing,
duck hunting, swimming, skin diving, and water skiing.

In sport they are used for racing and in piloting and

navigation contests.
1800-Electric and internal-combustion engines were used experimentally in
the second half of the 19th century in Germany, France, and Britain,
one of the earliest of the latter kind of engine being designed by
Gottlieb Daimler in the late 1880

1903-Alfred Harmsworth (later Lord Northcliffe) donated to the Royal

Motor Yacht Club the British International Trophy for Motor
Boats, popularly called the Harmsworth Cup.

1904-The American Power Boat Association (founded 1903) instituted the

Gold Cup (q.v.), which later became one of a series of races
(for hydroplanes from 1911) leading to a national championship.

Inboard runabouts are usually a bit
larger and are either open or have a

cabin cruisers, are equipped with
sleeping and cooking facilities in an
enclosed cabin for persons to live
aboard them.
