QMS ASSIGNMENT – ISO 9001: 2015

ISO 9001: 2015 deals with the set of international standards that establishes the basic criteria

and the requirements for a quality management system. These standards are used by

organizations to assess and demonstrate the ability to meet the standard quality requirements.

Various quality leaders have played a significant role in forming and shaping different

elements described in the ISO 9001: 2015. Major elements included in the standard

requirements include context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance

management, and improvement.

Role of different leaders in shaping the basis of standards are discussed below;

Context: Context is the broader refer denoting the standards and

essentials for the activities related to strategic planning of the

organization. It involves the assessment of different factors

that can impact the quality management system and the

planning for the concerns of QMS.

Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1.) As per the teachings of Crosby, external factors are

highly crucial and have the great impact on the quality

management system.

2.) Dr Walter Shewhart was the one to opt PSDA cycle

based on the planning which was the scientific method

of learning about QMS.

Leadership: Leadership can be considered as an important element for the

quality management system. Effective leadership is required

for the better management of quality. Also, leaders are likely


to have the direct impact on the QMS in terms of policy

formation and the planning and implementation of strategic

activities.

Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1. Armand Feigenbaum laid special emphasis on leadership

in impacting the quality management system.

2. As per the teachings of W. Edwards Deming, top

management is mainly responsible for maintaining the

quality standards. Top management is to be held

responsible for poor quality rather than the subordinated

employees.

3. Ishikawa highlighted the role of top management and the

leaders in impacting the QMS. According to him, top

management should have a control over their sense of

anger for the effective management of quality.

4. Crosby also highlighted the importance of leaders in the

effective management of quality standards.

5. Deming focused on established of structure such that top

management responsible for effective management of

quality.

Planning: Planning refers to the formation of plan for addressing the

need of the customers. It also involves the plan for the

potential risks expected in maintaining the quality standards.

In simple words, it involved determining the needs and


expected quality standards of the customers.

Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1. Crosby considered the establishment of quality councils

for planning regarding the quality management.

2. Feigenbaum considered the importance of planning for the

effective quality management.

Support: Support refers to the resources which can be used for the

purpose of maintaining quality standards within the

organization. Different resources considered for the quality

management include the finished goods, raw material, etc.

The element also includes the list of resources used for cross-

verification of the quality standards.

Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1. Crosby considered the employee education as an

important resource for the effective quality management

system.

2. Deming considered the programme of education and

training to achieve higher quality standards.

Operation Operation includes the list of activities and the control of

management over them which are used in managing the

quality standards of the organization and its finished products.

Formation of plan and its implementation along with

monitoring are the key components of operation.


Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1. Juran considered the importance of operational activities

for the effective quality management system.

2. Juran also highlighted the carrying of projects for the

purpose of problem solving.

Performance Performance management refers to the set of activities and

of handling and managing the quality standards. It comprises

several processes of management such as evaluation of

performance, evaluation of consistency, etc.

Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1. Dr Walter Shewhart was the one to develop statistical

concept and scientific methods for performance

management in association with effective QMS.

2. Crosby highlighted the need of performance management

by appreciating those who have performed well in terms

of quality standards.

3. Crosby considered the establishment of quality councils

for interaction regarding the quality management.

4. Ishikawa represented the use of charts such as pareto chart

for the performance management.

5. Deming highlighted the importance of mass inspection for

achieving better quality of products and services.


Improvement: Since quality standards and the requirements are expected to

vary and change with the passage of time and advancement of

technology, several changes and improvement needed for the

betterment and enhancement of quality standards are included

in the element of improvement.

Following has been the major contribution of quality

leaders towards the element of context;

1. Dr. Walter Shewhart was one of the quality leaders who

initiated the concept of improvement for the enhancement

in effective quality management system.

2. Deming considered the creation of constancy for

improvement of quality standards and the quality of

products and services.

3. Crosby considered the importance of quality improvement

team for better QMS.

4. Feigenbaum highlighted the need of improvement in the

quality standards for effective QMS.
