The Photo museum.
The Nederlands Fotomuseum annually organises exhibitions of and about photography. Not
only in its own exhibition galleries but also at other locations. Old family photographs, well
known news photos, exciting scientific photographs or experimental photoworks by visual
artists –they are all to be seen in the museum of photography. Depending on the nature or
subject of the temporary exhibitions, activities are launched, publications brought out,
guided tours given and meetings organised. There is thus always something to suit your
taste, whether you are a layman or expert, photography fan or imagemaker, hobbyist or
student.

The Nederlands Fotomuseum has moved to its new premises in Las Palmas and now has
almost two thousand square metres of exhibition space at its disposal – more than three
times as much as it had in the Witte de Withstraat. Besides changing exhibitions there will
also be semi-permanent exhibitions organised around certain themes, ensuring that you will
always be able to see beautiful and remarkable photographs from the rich history of
photography in the Nederlands Fotomuseum

The Nederlands Fotomuseum also pays attention to less obvious sides of photography. Of
course you will regularly find photographs by young and prominent Dutch photographers,
but you will just as often encounter photographs that are important because of their
meaning in everyday life. It is precisely this wide range of applications and manifestations in
which photography is encountered and used every day that makes the medium so influential
and fascinating.

The definition of radical

forms: a radical change in the policy of a company.
 favoring drastic political, economic, or social reforms: radical ideas; radical and
anarchistic ideologues.
 a person who holds or follows strong convictions or extreme principles; extremist.
 a person who advocates fundamental political, economic, and social reforms by
direct and often uncompromising methods.

ANGRY is an exhibition in the fotomuseum of Rotterdam. It focuses on the interpretation of

the angry obstinate adolescents. It shows the different forms of radicalism and shows the
public what it really is and makes you think about your own radical thoughts and the
thoughts of one another. It shows the radicalism in our own society and it is shown in three
different views. By the youth themselves, by the media and through the interpretation of
artists and photographers.

What the makers of the exhibition their real focus is “What is radicalization? Who is radical
and who says so? Is radicalization a threat to our society? ANGRY looks at the
uncompromising power and idealism of youth as a driving force for changes in our society. “
Among the artist that are infamous there are important international photographers and
filmmakers. The exhibition contains photo’s, video installations, web-based art, video
portraits, photos and videos.

The exhibition.
The exhibition itself was very different; there were movies, but also pictures. Our tour
through the museum was a walk along the pictures and we skipped the movies. We first
walked in and she tried to explain to us what radicalism really is and made us dig inside us to
our inner radical. Then we went into the exhibition itself and it differed a lot, but the thing
that was really clear that the pictures itself were almost completely and utterly anonymous.
Not that the person who was standing in the picture was anonymous (the face blurred out
etc.) But that it could be so many things and with some it was just on a white background
and what it mend only could be discovered by looking at the thing that was placed in front of
the camera.

My opinion.
I thought that the tour could have been better and the exhibition really isn’t mend for
teenagers that aren’t into these kind of things. Going with a class of people that follow the
class of CKV really has it downfalls. Not everyone is interested in this and it brings other
people down with them. The exhibition itself was also a little bit off. And for someone who
likes photography like me I would have expected more than what we have got from them.
The tour wasn’t complete. It only showed us a small part of something so big and some
pictures were too vague in their meaning. What I mean by that is that it took a while before I
(we) saw what they mend with it.

The exhibition could have been better, but it also has to do with personal taste and what
kind of photography you like. The subject was great, but the way it has been presented could
have been better in the way that it is more approachable to people of our age.
I’ll give it 2 and a halve out of five stars.
