Directions: Apply Polya’s four-step problem solving strategy in the following problems. Avoid erasures.

Write your answer in one whole sheet of paper.

1. In a basketball league consisting of 10 teams, each team plays each of the other teams

exactly three times. How many league games will be played?

ANSWER: There are 135 games that will be played in basketball league.

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM.

There are 10 teams in the league, and each team plays three games with each of other teams.
The problem is to find the total number of league games that will be played.

DEVISE A PLAN.

Let’s esteemed with only two teams. Hence, two teams can play each of others, once in 2
multiplied by 3, then divided by 2 is equals to three games.

CARRY OUT THE PLAN.

The pattern below shows that 10 teams can play to each other once. In a total of 10
multiplied by 9, then divided by 2 it is equivalent to 45 games. Considering each team exactly plays
three times, the total number of games is 45 multiplied by 3, is equals to 135.

AB AC AD AE AF AG AH AI AJ = 9

BC BD BE BF BG BH BI BJ = 8

CD CE CF CG CH CI CJ = 7
DE DF DG DH DI DJ = 6

EF EG EH EI EJ = 5

FG FH FI FJ = 4

GH GI GJ = 3

HI HJ = 2

IJ = 1

REVIEW THE SOLUTION.

Create an organized list in order to determine the total exact number of league games that
they played.

2. In consecutive turns of a Monopoly game, Terrie first paid Php 800 for a hotel

accommodation. She then lost half of her money when she landed in Gapan City. Next,

she collected Php 200 for passing San Isidro. She then lost half of her money when she

landed in Cabiao. Terrie now has Php 2,500. How much did she have just before she

purchases a hotel accommodation?

ANSWER: Terrie has Php 10,400 before she purchases a hotel accommodation.

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM.

There are 2,500 amount of money that left on Terrie. Find out how much is her money before
she acquire a hotel accommodation.

DEVISE A PLAN.

Calculate all the given data in the problem. Let’s assumed that Terrie has 10,400 amount of money
before she paid Php 800.
CARRY OUT THE PLAN.

Let x represent as her original money.

Terrie paid 800: x - 800

Lost half of her money: x – 800) /2

Collected 200: x – 800 /2 + 200

Lost half of her money (again): x – 800 /2 + 200 /2

After her turns, she has 2,500.

x – 800/2 + 200/ = 2500

x – 800/2 + 200 = 5000

(x – 800)/2 = 4800

x – 800 = 9600

x = 10, 400

Terrie has Php 2, 500 left. She lost half of her money so, 2500 multiplied by 2, is equal to 5000.
And for passing to San Isidro she collected Php 200 so less it by 5000 – 200, it is equal to 4, 800. She lost
half of her money again when she landed in Gapan City, so 4, 800 multiplied by 2, is equivalent to 9,
600. After that she paid the hotel accommodation for 9, 600 added by 800 is equals to Php 10, 400.

REVIEW THE SOLUTION.

Calculate all the data that was given in the problem. It illustrate that Terrie has Php 10,400 before
she paid Php 800 for accommodation.

3. The product of the ages, in years of three teenagers (Annie-eldest, Krissa – middle and

Kenny – youngest) is 4590. None of the teens are the same age. What are the ages of the

teenagers?
UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM.

Annie is the eldest, while Krissa is the middle and Kenny is the youngest among the three of
them. The problem is, to determine what are the ages of the three teenagers by using the list of
13,14,15,16,17,18, and 19 that has a product of 4590.

DEVISE A PLAN.

Let c, o, and e, represent as the ages while coe = 4590, and then solve it.

CARRY OUT THE PLAN.

• If 14 multiplied by 15, and then multiplied by 16, the answer is only 3,360.

• If 15 multiplied by 16, and then multiplied by 17, it is equivalent to 4,080. Still the product was too
small.

• Another, if we multiply 15 by 17 and 18, the product is 4,590. So this is the correct answer. Kenny is
15, Krissa is 17 and Annie is 18 years old.

REVIEW THE SOLUTION.

In order to determine the product of 4590, try to multiplied 15 by 17 and 18. In that way,
you will know the ages of three teenagers.

4. Jenna and Tinna bought a hat and a jacket respectively. A hat and a jacket costs Php 100.

The jacket cost Php 700 more than the hat. What are the cost of the hat and the jacket?
UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM.

By analyzing the given questions, it clearly states what are the cost of the hat and jacket. If
both of it costs Php 100 that Jenna and Tina bought.

DEVISE A PLAN.

Let’s assumed that z represents the price of hat and y represents the price of jacket. Subtract
it in 100 and combine it by 700.

CARRY OUT THE PLAN.

y = 400

z = 300

= (y + z) = (y – z)

= (400 + 300) = (400-300)

= 700 = 100

REVIEW THE SOLUTION.

Create an equation that will determined the price of hat and jacket. Considering that the
price of jacket is 400 and the hat is 300. Try to add it and you will get 700. Now, if you subtract 400 to
300, you will get 100 and it is the total cost of hat and jacket.

say, each people will be handshaking the six others. And as I distinguished each person, they made a
handshake.

Make a documentation of the activity by taking 3 pictures and post it in the
