CHAPTER - 6
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF SURVEY &
INVESTIGATION DATA
6.1. GENERAL
The project road starts from Amdura at chainage 0.00 while marking a Y-junction with
Nanded Malkautha road (SH-3) but 0.595 Km length of project road i.e Chainage 0.00 to
chainage 0.595 is already included in Pkg 1B of Nila junction to start boarder road (MDR-
83). Thus the new starting point of the road is at chainage 0.595. The project road connects
Shikajiwadi, Rohi pimpalgaon,Vasantwadi village and finally terminate at chainage 10.670
making a T junction with Mudkhed malkota road near vasantwadi village. The total length of
project is 10.075 Km. The project road traverses through Nanded district of Maharastra.
The consultancy services for the same is to include design of best possible alignment and
pavement composition, design of bridges, culverts and other structures in addition to analysis
of costs, determining project feasibility, preparation of Land Acquisition Plan, if any, and
obtaining of all requisite clearances.
The design standards adopted for widening/ improvement of the project section are IRC-SP-
73-2018 (2-lane manual) for 2-lanning of the project highway.
As discussed earlier, the existing horizontal alignment of the road consists of many sub-
standard/ sharp horizontal curves/right angle bends. It is observed that the project stretch
needs to be realigned at many locations if the horizontal alignment is upgraded as per the
design standard stipulated in 2-lane manual. As a result huge land acquisition, resettlements,
forest diversions etc. will be involved and it will incur additional cost. As such the total
project cost will be increased unnecessarily.
As such, the design standards have been adhered to with a realistic compatibility
without/ with bare minimum land acquisition. Considering the above factors and traffic
scenario on the project section and the unnecessary delay in project completion due to
involvement of different clearance activities, the Department has instructed to follow
the existing alignment as it is. Also, the existing horizontal geometry is proposed to be
improved as far as possible with in the existing ROW without acquiring any additional
land. In case, it is not possible or any black spot is there, proper safety measures
including speed calming measures as per codal provisions have been proposed to
enhance traffic safety.
Two lane has been proposed for the project stretch in general. Cross sectional details of the
proposed road are as described below-
6.3.2. Shoulders
In open country earthen shoulders has been proposed along with as per requirement of traffic
analysis. In built-ups, PCC shoulders/ paver block floorings have been proposed.
Details of proposed carriageway, shoulders & roadway is shown in the following Table.
6.3.4. Camber/Cross-fall
Chainagewise schedule of the proposed Typical Cross Sections for widening & improvement
of the Project Section is shown in the following Table.

Pavement is the most significant component of a road and therefore its design strengths must
be assured to support the projected traffic loading throughout the design period. Its cost
represents a major proportion of the total construction cost.
The existing road has flexible pavement in complete length. However, considering the
following factors rigid pavement has been proposed all along the road-
Summary of the present traffic and the design traffic after projection including proposed lane
configuration is shown in the following Table.
For the design of pavement, the design life is defined in terms of the cumulative number of
standard axles that can be carried before strengthening of the pavement is necessary. As per
IRC-58-2015, the design life of rigid pavement is considered as 30 years.
CBR tests of the existing subgrade as well as the borrow area soils have been conducted for
the project road which indicates a wide range of variations in the CBR values. However, the
pavement has been designed for a minimum CBR value of 8%.
Rigid pavement has been designed as per IRC-58-2015. Summary of proposed crust
thickness of the Rigid Pavement is as follows:
Road junction/intersection is a key element of highway design. The efficiency, safety, speed,
cost of operation and capacity of road system very much depends on the intersection design.
The choice between an at-grade and grade separated junctions at a particular site depends
upon various factors such as traffic, economy, safety, aesthetic delay etc. Grade separated
junctions generally are more expensive initially and are justified in certain situations from
safe operation of traffic (IRC: 62 – 1976). The main objective of intersection design is to
reduce the severity of potential conflicts between motor vehicles, buses, trucks, bicycles,
pedestrians and facilities while facilitating the convenience, ease and comfort of people
traversing the intersections. The design should be fitted closely to the natural transitional
paths and operating characteristics of the users.
There are 1 major junction & 8 minor junctions on the project road. Minor junctions are
mostly with village roads. No grade separated intersections are proposed on the proposed
alignment.

It is an objective to retain maximum structures which satisfy with required standards or can
be brought to required standards after certain strengthening / rehabilitation measures.
Treatments for existing cross drainage structures are proposed considering –
At present, there are 1 minor bridge and 13 Culverts (11 HPC, 1VCW, 2 RCC solid slab)
on the project section. All poorly seen structures as per visual inspection are proposed to be
replaced with new structures and structures in sound condition are proposed be retained or
widened. Minor repairing works of the retained structures has been proposed as per
requirement. Beside s additional structures have been proposed as per requirement of the
site. The improvement proposal of structures are listed the following table-

Roadway delineators are intended to mark the edges of the roadway so as to guide drivers on
the alignment ahead. Object markers are used to indicate hazards and obstructions within the
vehicle flow path, for example, channeling islands close to the intersections.
Delineators and object markers are provided as per the details given in the drawings and are
provided in accordance with the provisions of IRC: 79-2019. They are basically driving aids
and should not be regarded as substitutes for warning signs, road markings or barriers.
Delineators are provided for all curves of radius less than 600m. They are not provided at
locations where Chevron sign boards are provided.
Metal Beam Crash Barriers are proposed on both edges of road where height of embankment
exceeds 3.0 m and outer edges of curves have sharp curvature. These shall consists of W-
Beam fixed on posts (ISMB-150) placed at 15 m c/c. with spacers (ISM-150). Suitable
refectories are proposed to be provided and fixed on beam @ 3 m c/c for proper delineation
of barrier line. The locations of crash barrier are given below:

The details of kilometre stones are in accordance with IRC: 8-1980 guidelines. 5 th Km stone
& ordinary kilometre stones are provided as per the schedule given in tender drawings.
Kilometre stones are located on the left-hand side of the road as one proceeds from the station
from which the Kilometre count starts. Kilometre stones shall be fixed at right angles to the
centre line of the carriageway.
The details of 200m stones and boundary stones conform to IRC: 26-1967 and IRC: 25-1967.
200m stones are located on the same side of the road as the kilometre stones. The inscription
on the stones shall be the numerals 2, 4, 6 and 8 marked in an ascending order in the direction
of increasing kilometerage away from the starting station. The numerals shall be 80mm high.
The colour of the numerals shall be black on a white background. Boundary stones shall be
located on either side of the road opposite every 200m stone and kilometre stone. In addition
these shall be fixed at all angular points of the boundary.
Tree shall be planted with in the Right of Way and in the ear marked by the authority for
afforestation keeping in view the IRC guidelines on landscaping & tree plantation. The
numbers of trees to be planted shall be the 3 times of trees proposed to be cut with
similar Indian species like Albizzia procera (Safed Siris), Albizzia amara (Cyclone siris),
Dalbergia latifolia (Black Shisham/ Rosewood), Mengifera india (Desi Mango) & etc
with maintenance upto 5 years with survival rate of minimum 95%. Otherwise the
contractor shall be penalized @ Rs. 5000 per tree.
Pedestrian crossings has been proposed near road intersections, schools, colleges, hospitals
etc. locations as per IRC guide lines.
