Paul VI approved on Saturday the
canonization of John Neumann, 19-
century bishop of Philadelphia, as a
saint of the Roman Catholic Church.
No date was set for the ceremony
that will give the United States its
first male saint.
In a session attended by officials of
the Congregation for the Causes of
Saints and other Churchmen, Pope
Paul ratified as a miracle the
recovery of Michael Flanigan, a
Philadelphia resident, from bone
cancer in the winter of 1963-1964. The
papal decree said the miracle was
granted through prayers to the
European-born bishop, who died in
1860.
Vatican sources said the papal rite
proclaiming John Neumann as saint
was expected to be set for next year,
probably after Easter.
The United States got its first
native Roman Catholic saint last
year when the Pope canonized
Mother Seton, a 19th-century convert
who became a nun. The first U.S.
saint was another nun, Italian-born
Mother Cabrini, whom Pope Pius
XII canonized in 1946.
Pasadena offers aid to new city

The old City of Pasadena will ex-
tend a helping hand — and possibly
an olive twig — to the new City of La
Canada Flintridge.

brace for storm
A storm heading towards Southern
California could send waves of up to
15 feet crashing onto local beaches.
According to the National Weather
Service, a low pressure area
centered 400 miles west of Coos Bay,
Ore., is working its way down the
coast and could cause big breakers
on many beaches.
Persons with beach homes and
small craft operators are being ask-
ed to remain alert for reports of
higher than usual swells and surf.

Four La Crescenta youths were
killed early Saturday when their
stalled car was hit by an oncoming
train.
Dead are Christopher Johnson,
20, of the 3500 block of El Caminto
Street; Steven Ross, 17, .of the 3300
block of Montrose Avenue; Robert
Renville, 19, of the 3500 block of
Virginia Avenue, and Paul Lomell,
19, of the 5100 block of Boston
Avenue.
According to Glendale Police Sgt.
Pat McDonald, the car that the
young men were driving stalled on a
railroad track at the intersection of
Broadway Street and San Fernando
Road at 12:15 a.m. Saturday mor-
ning. Before the youths could get out
of the car, the car was struck by a
speeding Southern Pacific train.
The train carried the car for two
blocks before the engineer realized
what had happened and stopped the
train.
All were pronounced dead on the
scene.
McDonald said that the barriers at
the railroad crossing were down at
the time of the accident and so far
there is no explanation on why the
youths did not get out of the car.

tended Pasadenans — the 312 loan

The 312 loan program involves 3.5
per cent loans up to $17,000 for low to
moderate income owner-occupants
in the north central area of Pasadena
to bring property up to code and to
make some alterations for up-
grading. The city signed a contract
in April with the Los Angeles County
Department of Urban Affairs to
operate the program, with funding
through the federal Department of
Housing and Urban Development
(HUD).
Twelve of 19 loan applications —
for a total loan value of $91,550 —
have been approved so far and
another-22 loan applications are in

ACLU election view:

The 1976 elections probably spell
the end to a "hiatus" on civil rights
legislation and the beginning of laws
to resolve the lessons of Watergate.
That was at the heart of the elec-
tion perspective presented by
Marvin Schachter, vice chairman of
the national board of the American
Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), in a
talk Saturday night at a fund-raising
event of the Pasadena-Foothill
Chapter of the organization.
The event was held at a home in
Altadena.
Schachter, who is a Pasadena resi-
dent and past president of the ACLU
of the Southern California Affiliate,
targeted the foreign and domestic
intelligence agencies for top
legislative action to limit their
authority and powers.
For example, he said, the ACLU
will call for a legal charter for the
FBI and will develop an entire
legislative agenda for Congress to
deal with violations of constitutional
rights that were rampant in the •
Watergate case and for which there
currently are no legal recourses.
He said that the CIA should also be
held accountable to more than just
the President, and cited the FBI,
CIA activities in Angola as bringing
process. Administration costs of the
program will be paid from federal
funding provided under the federal
Housing and Community Develop-
ment Act.

will be submitted to the city board

land at Rosemont Avenue and

White voted against selling the ex-
cess land. "I'd like to see it either
left alone or developed as a promon-
tory," he said. The land overlooks
the Arroyo; much of it is on a steep
slope.
The city staff's sales plan involves
wide advertising of the land's
availability and providing guidelines
for development of the acreage.
Development proposals will be
sought in addition to money offers.

hotel on Nov. 27. But they're
frequently reminded that the
bird bombed on his last predic-
tion — that President Ford
would win the election.
"They must have taken it out
of context," Kerr argued when
shown a news story quoting the
bird as squawking "Ford
wins" a few days before the
election. "I said, because
President Ford was the in-
cumbent, I thought he would
win, but Rajah predicted
Carter.
"When Rajah makes a
prediction, that's it," Kerr
said. "I believe he's right. I
don't know a thing about your
politics; the bird is simply a
psychic phenomenon."
In addition to the problem
with the prediction, another
deterrent to sale of tickets
may be the reward promised
to one participant. Kerr said
Rajah will be set free to fly
through the audience, landing
on someone's head and leaving
his droppings.
"This will bring good luck to
the patron," Kerr said.
