TOPIC: SHILPA- KALA KENDRA A CULTURAL HUB


KANNUR

OVERVIEW:
There is a proposal to setup a subcentre for South zone cultural centre by the
Directorate of Culture, Kerala Government. The proposed project is at Pinarayi,
Cherikkal village of Thalassery Taluk in Kannur district.
The prime objective of the centre is to widen the cultural activities, the unique art and
craft forms of Kerala, to the masses especially to the rural population and to make
them understand, experience, learn and enjoy the cultural diversity of the state.

SITE DETAILS:
The land to be acquired is spread over an area of 16.6 acres in Pinarayi and
Cherikkal villages of Thalassery Taluk in Kannur district. The area is mainly used for
farming and agriculture purposes. Coconut trees and areca palm trees are the major
cultivations in this area. However other forms of cultivations are limited in this area
due to soil salinity. The mangroves present in this area is another important factor
which needs special attention by the authorities. Also, Ancharkkandi river is flowing
closely to the proposed project area.

RELEVANCE OF THE STUDY/ PROJECT: Live project


As part of the development in Kannur and developmental activities carried on by the
tourism department to make the place a Tourism destination. For this, the Pinarayi
village in Thalasseri taluk has a face lift. The proposed project is in Pinarayi, with lot
of green and the river Anjarakkandi flows near the site. There are 7 ferrys are under
construction, among them one is near our site. It is proposed to connect the site
through waterways and road ways, Also the Kannur international airport is 17.3 km
from the site.
Kannur district plays a main role in the contribution of art and culture to Kerala.
Kannur is the centre of many folk-art forms and folk dances. A number of folk plays
and dances are seen among the scheduled tribes and castes in this district. Each
tribe' has their own special folk dance forms and is mainly performed during festivals.
Folk dances are accompanied by folklores. Music and dance form a part of folk
dance. The Theyyam dance is the most prominent among the ritual dances
conducted at temples. It is the primitive art form and has its origin in Kannur.They
reflect the tribal culture and there are numerous temples in Kannur where this is still
performed. Vadakkan pattukal sung in praise of the heroes of the past are famous in
Kannur district. Some other art forms include Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, Poorakkali,
Marathukali etc. The Kalaripayattu is believed to have its origin from Thalasseri in
Kannur district. It is considered to be a cultural legacy of Kannur and is performed by
many. Marathukali is the fusion of two different styles of art forms.
Kannur is also famous for the handloom industry and is popularly called as the Land
of Looms and Lores. The handloom clothes of Kannur have gained international
acceptance. Long ago during the 14th and 15th century. Thaliparamba region was a
centre of learning, art and culture.
Also, Kuhnimangalam a village in Kannur known as the land of Glistening Bell Metal.
The project is proposed to bring the indigenous cultures of the zone closer to the
masses, especially to the rural populace and to the under privileged, and make them
understand, experience, educated and enjoy this cultural variety of our state. This
will not only help the state to keep alive the cultural values and traditions but will also
keep it emotionally integrated. Dance, Drama, Music, Art and Craft must all integrate
to make a total concept of every aspect of our culture through Cultural Centres.
