Nine toughest golf holes in Rochester?
You know the holes I’m talking about. The holes that give you
nightmares. The holes you just want to survive. The holes that provide
the greatest joy when you manage a rare par or birdie.
Let’s lace ‘em up and have at it. Bring on Rochester’s toughest tests.
NO. 12, SOLDIERS FIELD GC
The familiar short, tree-lined layout plays to a mere 5,823 yards from
the back tees. Not where you’d expect to find one of the longest par
fours around, but No. 12 at Soldiers fits the bill. Playing to 442 yards,
golfers hit their tee shots right along Broadway south. Guarding
against OB left, most tee shots wander into the trees on the right.
The southerly summer wind makes No. 12 play even longer. Very old
school small green for a 440-plus-yard hole.
NO. 17, EASTWOOD GC
Scorecard says 203 yards from back tee, but plays more like 240
yards straight up a mountain. One of hardest par 3s in Minnesota.
Don’t get enough height on your tee ball and trees halfway up the
hill on the right will grab your ball, maybe kick it into a bunker in
the hillside just for fun. Pull or hook your tee shot and well, double
bogey is the best you’ll do. As if the 200-plus yard straight uphill
tee shot isn’t enough of a challenge for any golfer, the green is the
most diabolical at Eastwood. Huge back to front slope creates very
challenging long lag putts, as well as very tricky chips and pitches.
Make a par 3 here and you’ve earned the right to enjoy that post
round beer or soda.

NO. 6, NORTHERN HILLS GC
The most intimidating tee shot in Rochester. Used to look out at a
rutted gravel road and a few rooftops. Now it's high-speed traffic
and an endless sea of homes in northwest Rochester. Golfers must
guard against drifting right off the tee and finding the water, which
absolutely gobbles golf balls. Bail too far left and you’re dancing with
the chain link O.B. and a re-tee. Slicers must hang their tee shot out
over the O.B. fence and drift it back toward the water. Gulp. Things
don’t get any easier up around the smallish elevated green. Chipping
from over the green … call Phil Mickelson. Another factor making
this hole ever more challenging is how all the trees have mushroomed
larger over the past 30 years. Lots of limbs waiting to swat down your
second or third shot here. Birdies can be had, but par is a good score
on this 500 yard sharp dogleg right par 5.
NO. 12, WILLOW CREEK GC
Only 364 yards from the back tees, golfers are faced with a creek
running the length of this par four on the left and a mountain side
of trees and O.B. to the right. If there is one tree Rochester golfers
would love to chainsaw down, it would be the huge overhanging tree
on the right side of the 12th fairway at Willow Creek. Kind of like
Wilt Chamberlain sitting out there swatting away nice looking drives.
Navigate past Wilt and avoid the creek on the left and you still have
to contend with the devilish green that slopes very hard back right
to front left. Many a three putts are recorded on No. 12 at Willow
Creek.

NO. 18, ROCHESTER GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
This hole has changed. Big time. For decades, trees lined both sides
the length of the hole. Now most all the trees are gone, even the
monstrously huge tree that protected the front right of the green
at the crest of the hill. Over/under on the number of cuss words
that tree induced the past 50 years ... let’s go with 10 million. A
conservative estimate. But don’t be thinking the home hole at RGCC
is a piece of cake now. Anything but. Severe sloped lies in the fairway
still confound, while new bunkers on the left side of the fairway
torment you from the tee. One final truth about taking down tons of
trees on golf courses: It makes for better grass growing conditions.
More sunlight/air movement = very good. The 18th green at RGCC
was already notoriously challenging, and it's getting faster/firmer now.
If the pin is on the left side of the green, pray. Pray hard. If you 3 or
4 putt, commence to the beautiful bar and grill, order your favorite
beverage, then gaze out on the 18th green and plot your strategy for
next time. No. 18 at RGCC will be waiting.
NO. 9, OAK SUMMIT GC
The signature hole at Oak Summit and a monster par 3. It measures
222 yards from the back tee, and plays over a valley of trees on the
right and left. Most tee shots come up short. Now you’ve got a pitch
straight uphill to a green with lots of break. Lots of doubles and triple
bogies here. In truth this very difficult hole plays like a short par 4.
NO. 15, MAPLE VALLEY GC
Number 15 at MVGC requires maximum control. The Root River
awaits all the way up the right, but be careful of the pond on the left
off the tee on this 481-yard par five. I’m guessing close to a million
golf balls have splashed into this pond since Maple Valley opened for
play in 1964. The green is tucked around and behind overhanging
trees left of the green. Don’t mess with these trees. They eat approach
shots.
NO. 15, ROCHESTER GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
One of the most storied and revered par fours in the state of
Minnesota. Quite different now since almost all the trees on the right
side have come down, but the genius of the hole has always been its
subtlety. Have to avoid left off the tee. The approach shot must be
calculated carefully. Do not go flag hunting if the pin is on left of the
green. Miss left and well ... nice knowing you. Bail out your approach
shot to the right and you’re going to wish you had a 70-degree sand
wedge. Even so, you’re still making bogey.
NO. 16, SOMERBY GOLF CLUB
My vote for the hardest hole in Rochester golf. At 454 yards from the
back tee, this par four plays even longer into a south wind. A marsh
cuts along the length of the hole on the left. Pull or hook and you’re
wet. Don’t go too far right or you’ll tangle with Somerby’s infamous
rough. The two level green really makes the hole. A big ridge cuts
the green in half. If the pin is cut on the top right side of the green?
Good luck.

In 2021, the Rochester City Council hired the National Golf
Foundation—a well-respected consulting group—to “evaluate
the current condition and future market potential of the four
City golf facilities: Eastwood Golf Club, Northern Hills Golf
Course, Soldiers Memorial Field Golf Course, and the
Hadley Creek Golf Course.”
And evaluate they did. The NGF put together a 138-page
report. We read the whole thing. So you don’t have to.
Here are 18 random facts and stats, pulled directly from
NGF’s findings.

1. SEASON PASSES MAKE UP 67
PERCENT OF ROUNDS ...
“More than 2/3 of the golf played in this
system is from holders of pre-paid golf passes
that allow for a single annual fee for all golf
rounds.”
2. ... AT HALF THE REVENUE.
“The result of this season pass arrangement
is that most of the golf being played at City
courses is at a severe discount, leading to
a much lower average revenue earned per
round—less than $9.00 per round compared
to an average of $16.19 for daily fee players
(47% discount).”
3. DRIVING RANGES CAN DRIVE
REVENUE.
“For many public golf courses, the driving
range can be a significant source of revenue
if it has the appropriate features, such as
good quality turf, good golf balls, convenient
accessibility to the parking lot/clubhouse and
adequate size (275 yards+ of length). The
ranges at Rochester Golf courses have most
of these characteristics, and thus can be a
strong profit center for the City.”

“The existing Soldier Field Golf Course is a good fit in the Rochester
City system, providing a shorter-length 18-hole with less challenge
that appeals to less-skilled and less-serious golfers, many of whom are
seniors and active in one (or more) of the many leagues that use this
golf course.”
9. ... BUT IT’S L ACKING IN SIZE AND AMENITIES ...
“The Soldiers Field site will never support a true championship layout
due to the small size. ... Although Soldiers Field showed some decline
in activity in 2020, it remains the most active golf facility in the
Rochester system. However, the $197,300 in direct City revenue is
the lowest of the three 18-hole facilities in the system, and significant
growth in revenue is not anticipated at this location given current
amenities.”
10. ... AND MAYBE IT SHOULD BE A 9-HOLER.
“While there are large-scale capital investment needs at SFGC (most
notably a $1.0 million+ irrigation system), it is hard to recommend
investment at this location given other needs in the system and the
potential for new site considerations (full upgrade or reduction to 9
holes as presented in this report).”
11. HADLEY CREEK IS A “GREAT COMPLEMENT” ...
“Hadley Creek includes a short 9-hole golf course and extensive
practice amenities that are ideal for beginners looking to take up the
game, or seasoned players looking to practice. The facility provides a
great complement to the City’s golf system and can be a key vehicle
for growing golf in Rochester.”
12. ... AND BRINGS IN THE REVENUE.
“The overall revenue generation at Hadley Creek GC is currently
about $177,000 annually, an amount that is not that much lower than
the 18-hole Soldiers Field GC. HCGC generates over $40,000 in
driving range revenue alone, the highest in the Rochester system.”

a brand-new clubhouse in 2019. NHGC is located in the heart of a

About the course: One course, two personalities.
The original 18-hole layout at Eastwood was
designed by Rochester golf legend Ray Keller. The
old front nine was scrapped in 2007. What was
the back nine became the front nine, and the new
back opened for play in 2008. The new back nine is
longer, but offers multiple tee boxes so golfers of any
level can play to their game. Eastwood’s challenging
and beautiful back nine is a bargain, playing like a
high-end course for the price of a municipal course
(its front nine isn’t anything to scoff at either).
Our favorite hole: Hole #14 has been called “the
toughest par 5 in the area.” This monster dogleg
right (607 yards from the black tees) begins with a
challenging tee shot over water to a fairway lined
with brush to the left and woods to the right.

About the course: A lot has changed in the
city of Rochester since Northern Hills opened
for play back in the summer of 1976, when
it quickly leapt to the top of the city courses.
That top-tier rating, though, hasn’t changed.
Area golf experts regularly rank Northern
Hills in the top two for area courses. North-
ern Hills has a good mixture of rolling hills
and trees, not to mention an abundance of
wildflowers. Its short par 4s make long hitters
question keeping their driver in the bag on
several holes. The sloped greens provide many
tough wedge shots and putts.
Our favorite hole: Hole #6 (504-yard, par 5
from the championship tees). A par 5 with ea-
gle potential, this is a classic risk-reward hole.
Even after the recent redesign, it’s still one of
the toughest tee shots in town.

Favorite hole: Hole #7, 557-yard dogleg right
par 5 from the blue tees. There’s water on the
left at the corner, and trees on the right. If you
hit a good tee shot, you can get home in two.

Soldiers Field’s flat, short design makes it great
for beginners, but its top-notch smallish, quick
greens and abundance of trees still test the ex-
perienced player, and golfers of any caliber will
appreciate the views of the Zumbro River.
Two classic threes: They say that par 3s define
a course, and Soldiers has two classics. The sig-
nature hole—hole #5, the elevated tee-to-ele-
vated green, 165-yarder—has been redesigned
twice since 1960 and your tee shot travels over
and along the Zumbro. Also, SF’s eighth hole
may be the city’s toughest par 3.
