Unit 2 Culture The United Kingdom

There are four countries in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The
capitals of these countries are big and exciting cities.

In London, there are a lot of famous places: Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and the amazing Houses
of Parliament. In Edinburgh, there’s a fantastic old castle and there’s an enormous party at New Year.
In Cardiff, there are spectacular new buildings. There’s the Millennium Stadium and the Wales
Millennium Centre. And in Belfast, there are a lot of historic buildings, like the Albert Memorial Clock and
the City Hall.

But there are loads of other interesting places to see in the United Kingdom. There’s beautiful
countryside. And the city of Liverpool. It’s the home of The Beatles and a very famous football club. In
Newcastle, there are bridges over the River Tyne. And in York, there’s an incredible cathedral.

Glasgow is in Scotland. It’s about eighty kilometres from Edinburgh. There are a lot of great shops in
Glasgow. Manchester is in the north-west of England. It’s a fantastic place to visit if you’re really into
football!

Oxford is a very old city in England. It’s prettier than Manchester and it’s got a famous university.
Brighton is on the south coast of England. It’s more exciting than Oxford. It’s got a busy beach and a
long pier. Padstow is a small village in the south-west of England. It’s much smaller and quieter than
Brighton. The people are very friendly here. And the fish and chips are delicious!
