ACTIVITY 5.1 Managing Time, Space and Learning Resources

OBSERVE

Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your observations.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.

In my observation, I noticed that the virtual classroom is made up of different types of

diverse learners where each has different skills and talents in different fields. There are
students who are active in oral recitation and there are also those who demonstrate my skills
in group activities and performance tasks assigned by their teacher. There is great in the field
of music, sports and so on but it is also inevitable that there are students who are shy in class
and rarely participate in the discussion. Therefore, I realized that different characteristics can
be observed within the virtual class. The age of my students is in the range of 15-16 years
old.

2. How many boys are there? How many girls?

Not all students attended the online class so only 20 students made up the number of
attendees with 15 females and 5 males.

3. Focus in their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?

If we pay attention to their behavior shown in class, it can be said that the teacher is able to
manage their behavior because they are quick to learn and know how to follow the teacher's
instruction and they are also quick to control in the virtual classroom even though some of
them are not actively participating in the discussion.

4. Can the learners already work independently?

Yes, because their output shows that they can be trusted because they finish the activities left
by their teacher on time and they also show responsibility for everything. Also notice in their
task performance that they are able to work independently.
5. Describe their span of attention.

Because learning takes place in a virtual setting, it is inevitable that the teacher will have
students who do not pay enough attention to her class because their attention span is short due
to various noise and destruction in their respective homes. Therefore, the teacher used an
audio-visual presentation to capture their interest and maintain their interest in listening and
watching to various short movie clips related to the topic.

ANALYZE

1. Are there areas in the classroom for a specific purposes (storage of teaching aids,
books, students belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a
difference if these areas for a specific purposes are not present?

Yes, in the virtual classroom, there are also various features that students can use for specific
purposes such as share screen where everyone can present their idea on the topic and use it
for reporting purposes. Moreover, there is also a chat box where each student can share
different opinions on the topic by typing their answer to the teacher’s question. Students can
also show different reactions to what the teacher is discussing by using different emoticons
and raise hand buttons to make the class as interactive as what is actually happening in the
actual classroom. If these features or areas are not present, it may be difficult for the teacher
to engage students in discussion and various activities because they are used for specific
purposes to make the discussion more lively, interesting and interactive within the virtual
classroom.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules
reinforce positive behavior?

Yes, if there are classroom rules and procedures in the actual classroom, there are also
implementing rules and regulations within the virtual classroom to maintain order and smooth
flow of the discussion. Some examples of this are mute your microphone during class, use
"raise hand button" if you want to say and share something in class, open your camera, use
chat box for additional ideas or insights and many more. Yes, the implementation of the listed
virtual classroom rules and procedures controls the behavior and attitude of students to
reinforce positive behavior so that the overall flow of the discussion in the online setting is
orderly.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource Teacher
is available, ask him/hey to describe the process. What's the effect of students’
participation in rule-making on student's behavior?

Yes, every student should really follow and participate in making classroom rules and
procedures so that they are aware of the do's and dont’s in offline or online setting. Their
participation in rule-making has a big impact on students' behavior because they can learn to
be disciplined by simply following the rules enforced by the teacher.

4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (Prayer, attendance,
assignment of monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
The teacher’s classroom routine will not miss starting the class with a short prayer to seek
guidance, wisdom and knowledge throughout the overall flow of the class. This is followed
by a review to measure student’s prior knowledge followed by motivational activities before
finally presenting the topic to be discussed. It also includes stating her learning objectives and
providing assessment through the use of gform and performance tasks which is conducted
through a group presentations or group activities in the latter part of her class.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this help
in managing the class?

Due to the current shift of learning modalities from traditional face-to-face classes to online
distance learning, there is no seating arrangement to be followed in the online class because
each student is free to sit wherever they want. But if you ask me, the implementation of the
setting arrangement will help a lot to have order in the classroom.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

In the online setting, there are many ways to reduce the noise level of the virtual learning
environment and one of them is to implement "mute your microphone" when not speaking.
Students can also use a headset or earphone with noise canceling features to reduce ambient
noise whenever have an online class.

7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off-task, what does the Resource Teacher
do? Describe the behavior strategies used.

To prevent students from not following the teacher's instruction, the resource teacher makes a
list of classroom rules and procedures to remind students of the things they should follow and
do. She outlines her classroom routines before the class finally starts by using a PPT
presentation. Only in this way will all students be aware of the behavior they should exhibit
during online class.

8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (Behavior

strategies)

The teacher can only reinforce positive behavior if he has a list of classroom rules and
procedures or classroom routines that has to be implemented in her class because it will
control the behavior of her students so that they are disciplined and responsible in everything
and it will also teach the students of things that should and should not be done during class to
maintain order and a smoother flow of the overall discussion.

Reflection as a future teacher.

1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

As a future teacher, it is important that I implement different classroom rules and procedures
that students must follow because this is the only way for students to be more disciplined and
learn proper manners. In order for me to enforce positive discipline on my students, I will not
punish them for their violation but I will give them time to reflect on what they have done or
behaved through intensive conversation to remind and advise them on the difference between
right and wrong. If they did something great during class, I will give them a clap or praise to
give them more encouragement and motivation to continue studying hard.

ANALYZE

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learner's behavior?

By implementing classroom organization and routines, students are guided in the things they
should do and follow within the classroom. Every learner also develops proper discipline
because the teacher corrects and controls their behavior. Its launch also helps to keep the
class flow smooth and organized.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom
organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
What the teacher has in mind in designing classroom organization and routines is to hold
students accountable and responsible for their misbehavior or misconduct during class
because its purpose is to discipline students and to make the overall flow of his class smooth.
Based on my understanding, the theory that can be anchored in this idea is Skinner’s operant
conditioning from which the concept of positive punishment is derived which it involves
presenting an unfavorable outcome or event following an undesirable behavior.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In
motivating students? Why were they effective?

As a future teacher, the best strategies I can use or apply to manage my students' behavior is
to give them consequence or punishment whenever they behave badly. To motivate them in
their studies, I will give a reward and award to all students who are obedient and do not
violate classroom rules. In my opinion, the concept of reward and punishment is effective so
that I can control the behavior of my students.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do
you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level?
Why?

In my opinion, I see myself in the future teaching grade 10 students. For me, stricter rules and
procedures are more appropriate at this age because my students are quite mature. I know that
every student has the ability to know right from wrong so I want to practice enforcing stricter
rules so I can teach them to be more responsible and disciplined.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
choose these rules?

- Arrive on time in class and always be punctual.

- Maintain good hygiene
- Always wear a proper uniform.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the classroom before going home.
- It is forbidden to miss class without a valid reason

I chose these classroom rules and procedure because I know it will help a lot in their
personality development so that my students will be more disciplined, orderly and decent.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

Yes, because it is important that students are also aware of the things they should do and
follow so they should just be involved in making class rules. Students also know the problem
within the school so it is important that they also take part in doing so.
