Asian Waterbird Census is being carried out from January 2- 16, 2022.

• Locations of survey - seven wetlands in the NCR — Hastinapur
Wildlife Sanctuary; Dhanauri and Surajpur wetlands in Greater
Noida; Delhi Zoo and Sanjay Lake; Okhla Bird Sanctuary; Najafgarh
Jheel; and the Yamuna River.
• Purpose - to help with identifying and protecting areas that are
important for waterbirds.
• Surveyor - Wetlands International South Asia and the Bombay
Natural History Society.
o It is part of the International Waterbird Census.

• Results - Sanjay Lake witnessed a downgrade in species count, ANS - A

which declined to 13 from 17 species.

o The lower species diversity is a sign of degradation of the lake,
since waterbirds are an indicator of its health.
o Of the 13 species, 11 were resident and only 2 were winter
migratory species - Great Cormorant, which migrates from
Southeast Asia, and the Eurasian Coot, which migrates from
Temperate Asia.
