The State of Food and Agriculture

‘The State of Food and Agriculture’ (SOFA) 2021 report has been ANS - A
released by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
• The report focussed on the need to make food supply chains more
resilient to shock and stresses to ensure availability and access to
food by people.
• Although, agri-food supply chain has shown an unexpected resilience
in the face of Covid-19 pandemic, actions are required to make it more
resilient, climate-friendly, affordable, and sustainable.
• Globally, some 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet, one that
protects against malnutrition in all its forms.
The State of Food and Agriculture
• As per FAO, if a shock reduced the income of people in 143 countries by one-third,
a healthy diet would be beyond the financial reach of an additional 1 billion people. ANS - A
• The burden of this additional 1 bn people would fall mostly on middle-income
countries. In low-income countries, this shock would translate into a deficit in
availability of energy-sufficient diet for a large amount of population.
• Meaning of agri-food system – It includes production of agricultural products (food
crops + non-food products like livestock, fisheries, forestry and aquaculture),
production chain of synthetic meat, and food supply chain from producer to
consumers.
o Globally, these systems produce some 11 billion tonnes of food each year.
