INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

From the moment a child is born, his or her education begins. At first,

education is an informal process in which an infant watches others and imitates them.

As the infant grows into a young child, the process of education becomes more formal

through play dates and preschool. Once in grade school, academic lessons become the

focus of education as a child moves through the school system. But even then,

education is about much more than the simple learning of facts.

Schools opening will not necessary mean traditional face- to –face learning in the

classroom. The learning delivery modalities that schools can adopt may be one or a

combination of the following, depending on the covid-19 restrictions in the particular

context of the learners in the school or locality. Online Education has been dramatically

used recently because of the widespread of this pandemic in the country. Through this,

the form of distance education that has unlimited participation and interaction with

students and teachers from around the world has been addressed.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study is conducted to determine the factors affecting the academic

performance of selected Grade 6 students using different learning modalities of Plaridel

Elementary School SY 2019-2020.

Specifically, this study seeks to find answers the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents as to:

a. Name

b. Age

c. Address

d. Sex

2. What are the learning modalities of the respondents?

3. How are the factors affect the academic performance of the respondents?

Objectives of the Study

Generally, this study aimed to determine the factors affecting the academic

performance of Grade 6 pupils using different learning modalities of Plaridel

Elementary School SY 2019-2020.

At the end of the study, the researchers should be able to:

1. describe the demographic profile of the respondents,

2. identify the different learning modalities use by the respondents; and

3. determine the factors affecting the performance of the respondents.

Significance of the Study

The study aims to determine the factors affecting the academic performance of

Grade 6 pupils using different learning modalities of Plaridel Elementary School SY

2019-2020.

For the students, this would help them provide important information that would

help this to make necessary so that they will know what learning modalities where the

students learns best. It also helps them understand the factors affecting the academic

performance using of different learning modalities.

For the teachers, this would help them aware for the strategies best use that

would help in the academic performance of the students despite of the pandemic. Aside

from that, this study would help them to find another way for the students more engage

in learning.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is conducted among the selected Grade 6 students of Plaridel

Elementary School. It will be conducted from May to June 2021. This study is focused

on the selected Grade 6 students of Plaridel Elementary School, students is the

respondents and cannot be generalized to be true to all.

Operational definition of Terms

the internet, without the students needing to attend a

school or college.

Education - the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction,

especially in school or university.

Learning Modalities - the century channel or pathways through which

individual give, receive, and store information.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the

researchers have used to give an insightful background on the topic under study.

Discovering the Students’ Learning Styles

A journal article written by Aysyad (2018), focused on describing the learning

styles of the SHS students in Bangkulu Province and their perception on local-oriented

and learning style-based English learning materials. In this article, it was concluded that

the students prefer these local-oriented and learning-style based English learning

materials. This article is connected to the researchers’ current study about the factors

that can affect the academic performance of the students. According to the newspaper

article with the title “We all learn differently, and that's OK: Learning preferences can

help students create a unique educational experience”

Sutherland (2017) wrote that the author read the text of her required reading

material, becoming weary and frustrated that had conflict in comprehending it. She also

had a difficult time focusing and listening to lectures in class. However, once she

discovered she was a visual learner, she changed her study habits to be more visual by

watching videos or creating pictures to outline complex concepts. This example relates

to the researchers’ current study because every student has a different learning style,

and it is important for students to embrace their individuality and the unique way they

learn most especially to this time of pandemic. In addition, the fact that there are

students experiencing difficulty in absorbing information from lectures should not be

ignored. Understanding what type of learner you are is important because bringing this

information to a student’s awareness can be used to his or her advantage in class or

when studying. From the given example by the author, spending time and effort for the

students is needed for them to be fully aware and understand on the specific topic.

Bisson (2014), wrote a magazine article with the title Different Learning Styles:

Allowing Children to “Unmold”. According to the author, when trying to instill values in

children, “Kids are like modeling clay.” However, when attempting to analyze the way

they learn, there is an urgency to allow kids to unmold. The study emphasizes the

importance of the roles of parents, guardians, and teachers, in the development of a

child. The author called the said people to action in creating an environment where the

supposed child is given the freedom to go past the set parameters that are oftentimes

imposed on him/her. Opening the door to experimentation and creativity is one of the

ways the children can be guided to discover their strengths and abilities, and to

recognize their weaknesses. It correlates to the researchers’ current study because it

gives information about different type of learning styles in each child or student. This is

beneficial to the researchers because it emphasizes the need to recognize the different

types of learning styles each student should address. Through this, if this concept were

to be utilized, it would be valuable to the teachers in to be fully aware on how to handle

his/her students despite of this widespread pandemic.

St.Loius (2017), wrote a magazine article with the title “How to Spot

Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic-Learning Executives”. The study stated that

understanding the different types of learners and making adjustments (in terms of how

an educator teaches) for their learning styles will improve communication and help
prevent frustration or misunderstanding – in the part of the students. The study

recommended that politeness in communication is the best way to deal with such

groups with varying learning styles. This has a relation to the researchers’ current study

because it specifically tackled on the way on how teachers help students to address their

learning difficulty. Other than that, it proposed a solution towards possible scenarios of

miscommunication between an educator and a student when there is conflict between

the teaching style of the educator and the learning style of the student.

Many researcher has been discussed the different factors that affects the

students performance in their research. These are internal and external classroom

factors and these factors strongly affect the student’s performance. Research studies

shows that students performance depends o many factors such as learning facilities,

gender, and age differences, etc. that can affect student performance (Hansen, Joe B.,

2000).
