General Instructions:
(i) The question paper comprises four sections A, B, C and D. There are 36 questions in the question paper.
(ii) Section–A - question no. 1 to 20 - all questions and parts thereof are of one mark each. These questions
contain multiple choice questions (MCQs), very short answer questions and assertion - reason type
questions. Answers to these should be given in one word or one sentence.
(iii) Section–B - question no. 21 to 26 are short answer type questions, carrying 2 marks each. Answers to
these questions should in the range of 30 to 50 words.
(iv) Section–C - question no. 27 to 33 are short answer type questions, carrying 3 marks each. Answers to
these questions should in the range of 50 to 80 words.
(v) Section–D – question no. - 34 to 36 are long answer type questions carrying 5 marks each. Answer to
these questions should be in the range of 80 to 120 words.
(vi) There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions. A student
has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions.
(vii) Wherever necessary, neat and properly labeled diagrams should be drawn.

The refractive index can be linked to an important physical quantity, the relative speed of propagation of

Q19. Read the following and answer any 4 questions from 19 (i) to 19 (v).

A solenoid is a long helical coil of wire through which a current is run in order to create a magnetic field.
The magnetic field of the solenoid is the superposition of the fields due to the current through each coil. It is
nearly uniform inside the solenoid and close to zero outside and is similar to the field of a bar magnet having
a north pole at one end and a south pole at the other depending upon the direction of current flow. The
magnetic field produced in the solenoid is dependent on a few factors such as, the current in the coil, number
of turns per unit length etc.
The following graph is obtained by a researcher while doing an experiment to see the variation of the
magnetic field with respect to the current in the solenoid. The unit of magnetic field as given in the graph
attached is in milli-Tesla (mT) and the current is given in Ampere.

(i) If the direction of the electric current in a solenoid when viewed from particular end is anticlockwise ,

One of the most beautiful examples of spectrum formed by the nature is rainbow. We can see the rainbow if
we stand with our back towards the sun and rain Infront of us. Each raindrop act as a tiny glass prism
splitting the light into spectrum. As white sunlight enters and leaves these raindrops, the various colored rays
present in the white light are refracted by different amounts due to which an arch of seven colors called
rainbow is formed in the sky.

In a series electrical circuit comprising of a resistor having a metallic wire, the ammeter reads 5A. The
reading of the ammeter decreases to half when the length of the wire is doubled. Why? Explain.

Q34. (a)Write the names given to the vertical columns and horizontal rows in the Modern Periodic Table.
How does the metallic character of elements vary on moving down a vertical column? How does the size of
atomic radius vary on moving left to right in a horizontal row? Give reason in support of your answer in the
above two cases.
(b)What do you understand by periodicity? Does the periodicity in properties is a function of valence
electrons?

(a)An element ‘X’ has mass number 35 and number of neutrons 18. Write atomic number and electronic
configuration of X. Also write the group number, period number and valency of X.
(b)An element Z (2,8,2) combines separately with (NO3)-, (SO4)2- and (PO4)3- radicals. Write the formula of
the three compounds formed. To which group of the periodic table the element ‘Z’ belongs to? Will it form
covalent or ionic compound?
