Form 4 Exercise 2.

5
1. A stationary object is released from a bridge. It reaches the water surface in 3
seconds. What is the height of the bridge from the water surface?

2. A stone is released from rest from a height of 100 m. Calculate

a) The time taken for the stone to reach the ground surface.
b) The velocity of the stone just before it reaches the ground surface

3. A stone is falling freely from a height of 8 m from the ground. What is the velocity
of the ball just before it reaches the surface of the ground?

4. A stone is thrown vertically upwards with an initial velocity of 10 m s-1. Calculate

a) The maximum height reached
b) The time taken for the stone to return to its original position.

5. What is the weight of an object of mass 400 kg when it is placed on planet which
has acceleration due to gravity of 12.32 m s-2?

6. A particle is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 30 m s-1 from a point O.

Find
a) The maximum height reached
b) The time taken for it to return to O
c) The time taken for it to be 35 m below O

7. A stone is projected upward with an initial speed of 10 ms-1 from the

shown in the Diagram 1. It takes 6 seconds to reach the ground.
(a) What is the height of the building?
(b) What is the speed of the stone upon striking the ground?
(Neglect air resistance)

8. A stone is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 20 ms-1. Find

(a) the acceleration of the stone when it is
(i) on the way up,
(ii) just at the top of its flight,
(iii) on the way down.
(b) the maximum height reached.
(c) the total time elapsed when it returns to the starting point.

9. A stone dropped from the top of a tower 125 m high. When it has fallen 20 m, a
second stone is thrown vertically downwards with velocity V m s-1 from the top of
the tower. If the two stones reaches the ground at the same time, calculate the value
of V.
