from their own culture and tradition. Various contemporary art practices from every

Many contemporary artists use their work to comment on cultural and political
issues, including race, human rights, economic inequality, and global conflict. As
the world continues to change and impact human life on a large scale, art continues
to experiment with new ways of reaching its audience.

DANCE TINIKLING is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the
Spanish colonial era. The dance involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding
bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more
dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.

DANCE CARI�OSA The dance itself is intended as a
courtship dance, and is of a flirtatious nature. It literally means "she that is
loving" as the verb ending indicates it refers to a woman. It is muchloved folk
dance in the Philippines and the characteristic shy behavior of the female dancer
is said to represent the mannerisms of Filipina women. During the Marcos regime,

LAPU-LAPU SHRINE is a 20-meter bronze statue located in the Mactan PURPOSE

NINE MUSES The surprising Nine Muses of the Arts, ARTS
located at the UP Diliman campus, is a tribute to the arts, from the traditional
media of painting and music to new media: cinema and computer art. The function of
his public works lies in the way they inspire respect for previous generations and
remind the viewers of the past, of heroism, of the moments that made history, while
keeping a watchful eye over the present. The nine muses represent architecture,
dance, film, literature, music, painting, photography, sculpture, and theater.
They are placed on a ring-shaped pedestal hollow in the By: Napoleon
middle, allowing people to look at the sculpture from

Victorio Edades was a key figure in the history of Philippine art, ARTS counted
as one of the revolutionary Thirteen Moderns and later called the Father of Modern
Philippine Painting. Edades moved away from the idyllic landscapes of his
contemporary Amorsolo and instead preferred to paint a more sobering picture of
Philippine society. His works employed dark and somber colors, and were focused on
depicting the dirt and sweat of laborers, factory workers, and the Philippine
proletariat. Edades became Dean of the Department of Architecture in the University
of Santo
Tomas, later instituting an art degree program. He invited Carlos Francisco and
Galo B. Ocampo to become professors of the university, and the three were later
known as the Triumvirate.
