PHONETICS : 1ST YEAR

Course objectives:
1. Recognize and produce English (RP) speech sounds (vowels, consonants and
words) with accuracy and ease
2. Transcribe words using IPA symbols
3. Recognize and accurately use word stress.

 Ladefoged, P. (2005). A Course in Phonetics. Boston: Heinle & Heinle.
 Roach, P. (2000). English Phonetics and Phonology. Cambridge: CUP.
 Give appropriate links and sites to help students recognize different sounds
using Mobile Language Learning to enhance autonomous learning.

sounds and practice
Week 4 Description and classification of vowels and intensive
practice
Week 5 Description and classification of vowels and intensive
practice
Week 6 Classification of diphthongs and triphthongs
