1. PM in `giving mood` on first trip to Karachi
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif landed in the business capital of the
country on April 13, 2022 and in one fell swoop, promised to address
the years-old issues of Karachi`s development in what appeared to be
an attempt to win hearts in the city.
• During a fast-paced day-trip, which saw the PM back in Islamabad
before sunset, he and his team lifted the hopes of his political allies, as
well as the people of Karachi making commitments about the early
completion of mega water supply schemes, plans to import thousands
of air-conditioned buses and added financial assistance to the
provincial government from the centre for the swift completion of
development projects.

2. Dy speaker`s role restored, Punjab CM election


on 16th
• Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court Mohammad Ameer Bhatti on
April 13, 2022 ordered Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost
Mohammad Mazari to conduct the chief minister`s election on the
previously fixed date of April 16.
• The chief justice also set aside the recent notification, issued by
Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi whereby the

powers of the deputy speaker had been withdrawn, for being contrary
to Article 53(3) of the Constitution by virtue of which deputy speaker
in absence of the speaker attained the status of speaker.

3. Suri changes NA schedule to delay speaker`s


election
• In an apparent move to delay the election of the National Assembly
speaker and using his special powers under the rules, acting Speaker
Qasim Suri has changed the schedule of the sitting of the lower house
of parliament from April 16 to April 22.
• `The National Assembly session, which was scheduled to be held at
4pm on April 16, will now be held at 3pm on April 22. The change in
the schedule has been made by the acting speaker under Rule 49(2) of
the Rules and Procedure for the Conduct of the Business in the
National Assembly 2007,` said an official handout issued by the NA
Secretariat on Wednesday.

4. Pentagon hopes for `healthy` ties with military


• The US Department of Defence has emphasised `a healthy military-
to-military relationship` with Pakistan, hoping that these strong ties
would continue in future as well.
• At a Tuesday afternoon news briefing in Washington, Pentagon
Press Secretary John Kirby rejected the suggestion that the United
States could be forced to send its troops to Pakistan if the political
situation in the country deteriorated.
• `I don`t foresee any US military role here. And I`m certainly not
going to, again, wade into internal domestic politics in Pakistan,` said
Mr Kirby while responding to a question.

5. Schedule for first phase of LG polls in Sindh
unveiled
• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on April 13, 2022
issued schedule for the first phase of local government (LG) elections
in Sindh, setting June 26 as the day for polling.
• Under the first phase, elections will be held in 14 districts of Sukkur,
Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Mirpurkhas divisions. They are
Jacobabad, Kambar, Shahdadlcot, Shikarpur, Larkana, Kashmor,
Ghotki, Khairpur, Sukkur, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad,
Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot and Tharparkar.

6. Balochistan governor resigns


• Balochistan Governor Syed Zahoor Ahmad Agha, who belongs to
the PTI, resigned from his office on April 13, 2022. According to
Governor House officials, Mr Agha submitted his resignation to
President Dr Arif Alvi.
• `I would continue to play my role for the development of the country
and the nation,` he said in a statement

7. World Bank slashes Pakistan`s growth forecast


to 4.3pc
• Reducing Pakistan`s economic growth rate forecast for current fiscal
year by almost one per cent, the World Bank (WB) on April 13, 2022
said the last ditch energy subsidies by the outgoing government put an
additional burden on budget and threaten the International Monetary
Fund (IMF) programme.
• `The financing of the price cuts or subsidies can create an additional
burden on the fiscal budget, threaten the ongoing programme with the
IMF, and limit the use of the fiscal budget on other, more productive

projects`, said the World Bank ahead of the IMF-WB Annual Spring
Meetings beginning early next week.

8. India`s Infosys to exit Russia business


• Indian software giant Infosys said on April 13, 2022 it was
`transitioning` out of the Russian market following the Ukraine war
and conflict of interest accusations levelled at Rishi Sunak, the British
finance minister.
• Sunak`s wife Akshata Murty holds a nearly $1 billion stake in the IT
firm, which was founded by her father N. R. Narayana Murthy and
established itself as a global outsourcing behemoth.
• Critics have accused Sunak of financially benefiting from Infosys
operations in Russia through his wife`s stake, even in the wake of stiff
British sanctions against Moscow in response to the invasion of
Ukraine.

9. Colombo calls upon diaspora to send money


• Sri Lanka urged its citizens overseas to send home money to help
pay for desperately needed food and fuel on April 13, 2022 after
announcing a default on its $51 billion foreign debt.
• The island nation is in the grip of its worst economic crisis since
independence in 1948, with severe shortages of essential goods and
regular blackouts causing widespread hardship.

10. California start-up sends tiny robots on


voyage into brains
• Sending miniature robots deep inside the human skull to treat brain
disorders has long been the stuff of science fiction but it could soon
become reality, according to a California start-up.
• Bionaut Labs plans its first clinical trials on humans in just two

through the brain using magnets.
• `The idea of the micro robot came about way before I was born,`
