1) A timber beam in an existing building is 200 mm wide and 380 mm deep and is simply
supported at the ends of 4 6 m span. A) Calculate the safe uniformly distributed load for the
timber alone if the bending stress must not exceed 7 N/mm2. B) It is proposed to strengthen the
beam to enable it to carry a uniformly distributed load of 150 kN by bolting two steel plates to
the beam as shown below. Calculate the required thickness t of the plates if the plates if the
maximum permissible stress for the steel is 140 N/mm2 and the modular ration is 24

2) A compound beam consists of a standard I section Universal beam 381 mm deep and 152
mm wide with a steel plate 200 mm by 10 mm thick welded to each flange and extending for 1.5
metre both sides of mid-span. Ix-x for the Universal beam is 212.76×106 mm4.
If the beam is simply supported over a span of 6 m, determine the maximum uniformly
distributed load which the beam can carry. Ignore the self-weight of the beam. The maximum
permissible stress is 165 N/mm2.
