Cut Losses, Ensure Quality, Increase Productivity

Three Reasons
Switch to Optical In-line Turbidity Measurement

The taste and appearance of dairy products must be of consistently

high quality. During production it is vital to avoid errors that can lead
to out-of-spec product and the resultant costs of wasted product and
packaging, lost production, and potential damage to your brand. The
high speed packaging lines used in the dairy industry mean that out-
of-spec product has to be identified fast to prevent losses quickly ac-
cumulating.

Optical in-line monitors meet these needs as they can detect in-line
changes in turbidity in real time between product, water or CIP media.

Here are three reasons to switch to optical in-line monitors.

1 Cut Losses
Detection of milk to avoid losses at the filling line and carry-
over of product into wastewater treatment.

Using sight glasses to determine product changes or after

cleaning can lead to the loss of up to 4 liters of product
for every second of delay in switching valves. That
milk can be saved using the output from an optical
monitor to automatically control the process.

Optical monitors can also detect traces of dairy

products in effluent lines prior to treatment.
Through use of an early alarm, loss of product is
minimized and the costly treatment of effluent with
a high organic content can be avoided.

2 Ensure Quality
Identification of different milks including full fat, semi skimmed
or skimmed.

Optical monitors can be used as a quality check to detect changes

in product dilution or fat content prior to packaging. They can also
be used for product identification to ensure the correct product is
put into the correct pack. Figure 1 shows several dairy products
at different concentrations and the corresponding signal from an
optical monitor that can be further processed for control purposes.

3 Increase Productivity
Shorter, turbidity controlled CIP cycles, instead of volume / time
based

Optical monitors can be used to increase productivity by control-

ling caustic and acidic CIP protocols. This is done by measuring
turbidity instead of using fixed time cycles, which tend to be
longer than necessary. The CIP process is complete once the
turbidity signal becomes stable, indicating that all product resi-
dues have been removed.

In addition, the minimum volume of water required to flush be-

tween products can be determined by optical monitors, saving
water and time.
